DEHRADUN: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday banned further felling of trees in the Rs 12,000 crore all-weather Char Dham road project, a pet initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The felling of trees has been banned till the next hearing of the matter on April 4 although the tribunal did not order a stay on the project as was being demanded by environmentalists. A Doon-based NGO as well as residents of several villagers had appealed to the tribunal to “impose a stay on the ongoing work as the project was being executed bypassing mandatory environment clearances and environment impact assessment (EIA) procedures.” Following the appeal, the NGT bench, presided by acting chairperson Javed Rahim had sent a notice to the Centre and state government earlier this month. Over 43,000 trees, the state government has claimed, have been earmarked to be felled for the project of which more than half are already cut. The petitioners in their plea had stated that the mega project which involves widening of around 900 km of roads in the Himalayas had “already resulted in the cutting of 25,303 trees over a stretch·of 360 km of forest land in complete violation of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 and the EIA Notification, 2006.” Additional solicitor general NS Nadkarni, representing the ministry of road, transport and highway (MoRTH) -- which is overseeing the project -- told the tribunal that “the government will neither fell trees...
