However, this time the Government has indicated that it will impose a penalty. As per the law, the penalty amount could be lower than Rs 1,000 but it will not be higher. The government will specify the amount of penalty that will be levied from individuals who fails to carry out the PAN-Aadhar linking before the last date is over. "Without prejudice to the provisions of this Act, where a person is required to intimate his Aadhaar number under sub-section (2) of section 139AA and such person fails to do so on or before such date, as may be prescribed, he shall be liable to such fee, as may be prescribed, not exceeding one thousand rupees, at the time of making intimation under sub-section (2) of section 139AA after the said date," the bill said. "As per Income-tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not fall under the exempt category, to link their PAN with Aadhaar on or before June 30," it said.
