Loosely based on the NRL's 'Magic Round', all 18 AFL teams will travel to South Australia and play across three different grounds, with Adelaide Oval holding six of the nine matches. The weekend gets underway with a mouth-watering clash between Adelaide and Carlton on Thursday evening, while it concludes with ladder-leaders St Kilda facing Collingwood Sunday twilight. Norwood (hosting two matches) and Mount Barker Ovals (Brisbane vs North Melbourne) are the remaining locations for the other three games across the weekend. What is Gather Round? Adelaide Oval has long been one of Australia’s most recognisable and prestigious venues and hosts cricket, football, concerts, functions and major events at the highest level. Its prominent location as the centrepiece of the Adelaide CBD’s revitalised riverbank precinct makes Adelaide Oval an outstanding destination. Known the world over as a beautiful and historic sporting venue, the Oval attracts visitors in their thousands from within South Australia, interstate and overseas. Along with sports fans, the Oval has enormous appeal to visitors with an interest in history, culture, food and wine, as well as a large contingent of business travellers. Port Adelaide sure know how to put on a show, I think that might be half the reason their diehard supporters go every week and that’s a great thing! I found it a little tricky finding my seat but staff were happy to help. Food and beverages are extremely expensive and stalls aren’t manned with enough staff meaning long queues but I did go on the busiest night Adelaide Oval sees during the AFL season. Staff were very curt with patrons refusing to wear a mask when having left their seat which was good to see as social distancing was impossible. My first visit to Adelaide and AO was on my list of places to visit. Booking a tour was easy through the website and meeting place was the South Gate.
