Bills pending with Guv: Govt paid Rs 47 lakh so far for legal advice

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government is battling out with the Governor politically as well as legally. It has sought legal advice from legal luminaries as it tries to break the impasses over a clutch of bills Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has refused to give assent. Bypassing its own Law Department, the State has engaged the services of lawyers and has already paid Rs 46.90 lakh to them. In addition, Kerala Government allowed Rs 15.50 lakh to be transferred from the treasury to senior advocate Kapil Sibal. This was for appearing for the State over the petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking transfer of the hearing on the diplomatic gold smuggling to a court outside Kerala. During the previous Assembly session, 11 Bills were passed. Among them, four, including the one related to curtailing the powers of the Lokayukta and another intending to prevent the intervention of the Governor in the functioning of the universities, are yet to receive the Governor’s nod. Two other Bills passed last year also have not been approved by the Governor. The universities bill proposes to take away the powers of the Governor to appoint the convenor of the search committee to select new vice-chancellors. Meanwhile, the Lokayukta Bill removed the provision in the Lokayukta Act which made it mandatory for persons holding public office to resign in the event of an adverse order by the Lokayukta. The security guard Chandrabose, 50, had succumbed to the injuries on Monday. As details of Nisham’s actions emerged, there has been much anger spreading in Kerala and strong calls for justice to Chandrabose What fuelled more anger were reports that Dandapani Associates was the law firm that was fighting the case for Nisham. Dandapani Associates is run by the wife and son of the Advocate General of Kerala Mr. K.P. Dandapani. Reports claimed that Dandapani Associates that had represented Nisham previously was helping him out in this case too, and this was termed as cruel irony as Nisham who enjoyed the privilege of hiring the best amongst lawyers, that too from the Advocate General’s family, can try escape from the clutches of law. Former Advocate General of Kerala CP Sudhakara Prasad passes away

Prasad served as the Advocate General of the State for a total of ten years in two different terms. His first stint was from the year 2006 to 2011, when VS Achuthananthan was the Chief Minister of Kerala. The second tenure was from 2016 to 2021 during the first Pinarayi Vijayan government. He was also the Chairman of the Kerala State Bar Council from 2016 to 2019. He had resigned from the post of Advocate General in May 2021. Prasad was known to be an expert in service law, and had experience in criminal, constitutional and civil law cases. He had also given legal advice to the VS Achuthananthan government that permission must not be given to prosecute Pinarayi Vijayan in the famous However, the Governor had rejected the decision taken by the government.

Senior Advocate R Shanmugasundaram to be next Advocate General of Tamil Nadu

According to the government order released from the governor's office, R Shunmugasundram has been appointed as the advocate general. On May 1, a day before the declaration of election results, former Advocate General Vijay Narayan had resigned from the post, which he sent to the former chief minister. According to court officials, Shanmugasundaram's first appearance as Tamil Nadu's Advocate General will be on Monday before a bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, which is expected to hear the suo motu case on the Covid-19 management in the state.
