All That Breathes movie review (2022)

The ruminative and moving “All That Breathes” opens with a shot of a dark landscape as a camera moves over the littered ground in the city of New Delhi. As other animals lurk in the background, the garbage in the street is food to the rats that scurry in an unfocused frame, the noise they make getting louder as more of them feed. As their hungry noise grows in volume, car headlights get brighter in the distance, a sign of the humanity in the background that has impacted this existence, the shot ending with it being overtaken by that white light. It’s just the first of several absolutely breathtaking images in this masterful documentary from Sen focuses on a pair of siblings, However, Sen also finds SO much beauty in everyday nature. There are shots in “All That Breathes” that are among the best of the year, from a group of bugs drinking from a pool of water in which the reflection of humans can be seen walking by or an unforgettable one that tracks down a crowded apartment building to a river below where wild pigs are crossing as horses stand on the banks. Human and animal life is not divided in a city like New Delhi—it is all part of the same tableau, and Sen’s film captures it with a blend of striking beauty and empathetic fragility. “All That Breathes” is not a traditional wildlife or climate change documentary. It doesn't have talking heads or on-screen facts. The information that’s garnered about the plight of the Delhi kites comes from Nadeem and Saud, who face their...

All That Breathes

In one of the world’s most populated cities, two brothers — Nadeem and Saud — devote their lives to the quixotic effort of protecting the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi that has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest, the ‘kite brothers’ spend day and night caring for the creatures in their makeshift avian basement hospital. Director Shaunak Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the brothers who help them return to the skies, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence. The Wildlife Rescue was formed in 2010 to provide quality health care, often on an emergency basis, to native wildlife. Located in Delhi, the NGO was founded by brothers Nadeem Shehzad and Muhammad Saud. On average, about 2,500 sick, injured and orphaned birds are treated and cared for annually. The center is run by staff trained in emergency aid, with specialized avian veterinary care. The hospital treats a wide variety of injuries and illnesses that include broken bones, infections, diseases and malnutrition. It also cares for babies and juveniles that have been left orphaned. For whatever reason a bird is brought into the hospital, the aim of the center is to rehabilitate that bird back into the wild. Wildlife Rescue has cared for more than 20,000 birds and animals since 2010. They have remained a safe abode for birds of prey in Delhi and its neighboring areas an...

'All That Breathes' review: Documentary about healing birds bursts with humanity : NPR

Mohammad Saud cares for black kite birds in Delhi, India, in the documentary All That Breathes. HBO In This useful life lesson takes literal form in All That Breathes, a wonderful new documentary that arrives on HBO and HBO Max garlanded with international awards. Directed by Shaunak Sen — and ravishingly shot by Ben Bernhard — this inspiring film takes us inside the lives of two ordinary seeming Muslim brothers in Delhi who are actually extraordinary in their dedication to doing good in a city teetering on the edge of apocalypse. The brothers are named Saud and Nadeem, the former friendly, the latter a little grumpy. Along with their somewhat comical sidekick, Salik, they devote themselves to a project they began as kids: protecting the bird of prey known as the black kite, a glorious, hovering creature widely detested as a scavenging nuisance. Day after day, ailing and injured kites arrive at their homemade infirmary where the trio nurses them until they're able to fly back into the urban wild. Talk about bird by bird! The guys have helped 20,000 so far. And the injured kites just keep falling from the sky in a city whose air is infamously filthy and whose toxin-laced landfills may be the world's largest. "Delhi is a gaping wound," Saud says, "and we're just a Band-Aid on it." Although the guys have moments of fun – they play indoor cricket – theirs is an endless, largely thankless task. We watch them do everything from fishing wounded birds out of sewagey rivers to talk...
