Amanjot Kaur shines on debut as India beat South Africa

Deepti Sharma put in an impressive all-round show as India defeated South Africa by 27 runs in the first match of the T20I tri-series. Batting first, India scored 147/6 with major contributions coming from opener Yastika Bhatia (35), Deepti (33) and Amanjot Kaur (41 not out). In reply, South Africa were restricted to 120. Yastika opened for India as Shafali Verma is captaining the U19 side in the T20 World Cup. India had a poor start as Smriti Mandhana (stand-in captain), Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues and Devika Vaidya got out on single digit scores. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur did not play the match due to an illness. India reeling at 69/5, Yastika and Deepti put up a 76-run partnership before Amanjot scored a quick-fire 40 from the No 7 spot to help India score a winning total. Hosts batting also had an off day as Indian spinners scripted an excellent outing at Buffalo Park. Deepti took three wickets, while Devika added two. Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Radha Yadav and Sneh Rana also picked up a wicket each. Never ever I thought of getting the player

NEW DELHI: Terming it as an 'unreal' feeling, batter Amanjot Kaur has never thought of winning the player-of-the-match award on her debut as the young Punjab all-rounder's 41-run knock guided India to a 27-run win over South Africa in the Women's T20 Tri-series opener in East London, South Africa on Friday. Young Amanjot dedicated her match-winning performance to her father "It's such an unreal feeling. Never ever I thought of getting the player-of-the-match award on my debut. I never expected it," Amanjot said after India's victory in the opening match of the series. Amanjot's father had enrolled her into a cricket academy as her 'passing interest', had to quit half of his work to ensure that his daughter's training does not get hampered. Gupta made some tough calls and made her switch back to star-studded Punjab and leave her captaincy job in Chandigarh, a gamble that paid off as she was picked for the Indian team. "My dad played a big role in my career. Initially, he thought it was just a passing phase and my interest in cricket will gradually wane. He never thought I would play for India. I was bent upon proving myself in cricket," she recalled. It was then when Singh stopped taking outstation contracts and worked only near his home at Mohali so that he got time to accompany Amanjot to her academy. "His (dad's) struggle is much bigger than mine, he left half of his work for me so that I don't miss out on my academy, dropping in the morning and evening. He quit half of ...

Father's sacrifice and coach's perseverance behind Amanjot Kaur's rise to top

CHENNAI: In the hours leading up to the T20I match between India and South Africa at East London late on Thursday night, not many expected Amanjot Kaur to make her debut. Not even her father Bhupinder Singh or coach Nagesh Gupta. But there was one person who was confidently looking forward to seeing her on television. At her home at Phase V, Mohali, Smt Bhagwanti, Amanjot’s Dadi ji (paternal grandmother), promptly asked to switch on the TV around 9 PM, asking, ‘Arey, where is Aman?’. “I was afraid that she might not get a game and it was late at night. So, I told her that the match would come on TV tomorrow and asked her to sleep. But around 11, she saw that the lights were on and asked us what was going on as we were watching the match. Aman was playing as well, so she sat down and enjoyed the entire match with us,” a delighted Bhupinder told this daily. Call it destiny or a Dadi’s goodwill, the Punjab all-rounder got her India cap on Thursday — with several players in the Indian camp falling sick due to allergies — and immediately made an impression. Coming in at 69/5, Amanjot smashed an unbeaten 30-ball 41, putting up a 76-run stand for the sixth wicket alongside Deepti Sharma. Thanks to her innings, India finished with 147/6 and registered a 27-run WIN in the first match of the tri-series. While everyone watching the match were blown away by her innings, Bhupinder and Nagesh aren’t surprised one bit. The chance to play might have come with some luck, but they both have...
