Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

To help confirm a diagnosis of IBD, you will need a combination of tests and procedures: Lab tests • Tests for anemia or infection. Your provider may suggest blood tests to check for anemia — a condition in which there aren't enough red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your tissues — or to check for signs of infection from bacteria or viruses. • Stool studies. You may need to provide a stool sample so that your provider can test for hidden (occult) blood or organisms, such as parasites, in your stool. Sigmoidoscopy exam During a flexible sigmoidoscopy, the provider inserts a sigmoidoscope into your rectum to check for abnormalities in your lower colon. • Colonoscopy. This exam allows your provider to view your entire colon using a thin, flexible, lighted tube with a camera at the end. During the procedure, small samples of tissue (biopsy) may be taken for laboratory analysis. A biopsy is the way to make the diagnosis of IBD versus other forms of inflammation. • Flexible sigmoidoscopy. Your provider uses a slender, flexible, lighted tube to examine the rectum and sigmoid, the last portion of your colon. If your colon is severely inflamed, your provider may perform this test instead of a full colonoscopy. • Upper endoscopy. In this procedure, your provider uses a slender, flexible, lighted tube to examine the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum). While it is rare for these areas to be involved with Crohn's disease, this test may be reco...

Many people experience adequate symptom relief with OTC NSAIDs and do not need to take stronger, prescription-strength options. Sometimes prescription NSAIDs are used because they provide longer-lasting relief. COX-2 inhibitors may be an option for people who have gastrointestinal side effects, which are common with OTC NSAIDs. Which NSAID Is Best? Usually, different NSAIDs can have similar effects. For example, if you are experiencing discomfort from arthritis, you might get relief from either Aleve (naproxen) or Advil (ibuprofen). But sometimes, people have a different response to treatment with a different medication, and a few medications might help your symptoms, while others do not have a significant effect. It's difficult to predict which medications will be the most beneficial. The best way to determine which NSAID is best for you is to try different options. Often a healthcare provider will recommend one NSAID, and if symptoms don't improve within several weeks of treatment, another NSAID can be tried. Keep in mind that you should not use more than one NSAID at a time unless your provider specifically tells you to combine them. One of the best reasons to consider some of the COX-2 inhibitors, such as Celebrex or Mobic, is that these may be taken as once-a-day doses rather than three or four times daily. In addition, the COX-2 inhibitors are thought to have fewer side effects on the stomach. Additional Treatment Options for Inflammation Medicine isn't the only way ...

A guide to OTC anti

Many anti-inflammatory medications are available over the counter, typically in the pain relief section of the pharmacy. Anti-inflammatories help relieve pain and discomfort due to inflammation. Anti-inflammatories are often known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Most people will experience no ill effects from using NSAIDs for minor aches and pains. However, certain people — such as those with high blood pressure — should talk to their doctor before taking an NSAID, as they may not be safe to use in this case. The following is a guide to the three most common over-the-counter (OTC) anti-inflammatories: Share on Pinterest A doctor may prescribe OTC anti-inflammatories to treat muscle aches.
