Asansol is a northwestern city in the state of West Bengal. It lies on the north of the river Damodar, around 8 kilometers or 30 miles northwest of Durgapur. The Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) is the civic body in Asansol that governs the Asansol Sadar subdivision in Pashchim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. History of Asansol Municipal Corporation or AMC According to a notification issued on October 29, 1850, Union Committees were put up in Raniganj, Katwa, Kalna, and the city of Asansol. These Union Committees fulfilled the functions of the municipalities. According to a notification dated April 23, 1885, Assensole (now Asansol) Municipality was set up on July 7, 1885. The sectors covered by the municipality at that time were: Bastin’s Bazar, the English Area, the Railway Colony, the Munshi Bazar, the Talpukur Chati areas, and the Budhdanga village. Seven government officials and twelve nominated members became and formed the first committee. With time, the municipal city town grew considerably from the industrial point of view. With the increase in coal mining growth, the developmental pace speeded up, especially in the railways and IISCO steel plant at Burnpur. The city finally emerged as a Municipal Corporation in 1994 by merging some rural parts of its community development block, certain colliery areas, and the Burnpur Notified Area Authority. West Bengal Municipal Election Result 2022 Updates: The Trinamool Congress today swept all the four municipal corporations of Bidhannagar, Siliguri, Chandernagore and Asansol in West Bengal, decimating the opposition parties including the BJP, CPIM and Congress. While the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC retained Bidhannagar corporation by bagging 39 out of 41 seats, the BJP and the CPI(M) failed to open their account. The Congress could win just one seat and an Independent candidate won in one ward. In Chandernagore municipal corporation, the TMC bagged 31 of the 32 seats, while the CPI(M) won in one ward. The TMC also snatched the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) from the CPI(M)-led Left Front. Of the total 47 seats, the TMC bagged 37 wards and the BJP emerged as main opposition by bagging five seats. The Left was relegated to the third position as it managed to win only four seats, and the Congress one. CM Banerjee was quick to announced that party leader Gautam Deb would be the next mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation. Deb won by a margin of over 3000 votes. In Asansol, the TMC emerged victorious in 91 of the 106 seats, while the BJP won in seven seats. The Congress won three, Left two and others three.
