By Ritvick Arun Bhalekar: Aurangabad and Osmanabad have been renamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively. The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday approved the proposal and said the central government had "no objection" to the change in names of the two cities in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister welcomed the decision and said that the state government under the leadership of CM Eknath Shinde "delivered". Maharashtra News: Amid the ongoing Maharashtra Political crisis which led to the resignation of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the Maharashtra Cabinet on June 29, 2022, approved a name change for the two districts including Aurangabad and Osmanabad. The Western District Aurangabad’s name has now been changed to Sambhaji Nagar while Osmanabad has been renamed to Dharashiv. The Navi Mumbai’s airport’s name will also be changed to DB Patil International Airport. Maharashtra State Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the decisions to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts to Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv respectively and also passed the proposal to extend name of farmer leader late D.B. Patil to under construction Navi Mumbai international airport. Decisions to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad were pending for many years and the Shiv Sena has been demanding the same for years. Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had mocked the Sena in the past questioning when the decision for the same will be taken. While the confidence motion on the State government is still pending, Mr. Thackeray in the meeting thanked the administration. “I am extremely thankful for your cooperation in last two and half years. I apologise if any of you is hurt,” he said in the meeting. Mr. Thackeray also thanked his allies – the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – saying they both cooperated with him. “But my own partymen betrayed,” he said. The decisions also come on the backdrop of rebellion against CM Thackeray by his party’s second in command Eknath Shinde with the support of 39 MLAs. Status quo on Aurangabad name

Aurangabad, May 17 (IANS) As the matter pertaining to the renaming of Aurangabad to 'Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar' sub-judice in the the Bombay High Court, the district authorities have advised all concerned departments to maintain a status quo, official sources said here on Wednesday. After the Centre's approval in February, certain government departments and outsiders have switched over to the new name in their routine communication and other regular official dealings. However, college officials have now advised all such departments to strictly adhere to the high court directives and refrain from using the new name till the court's final decision. "The government's stand, as informed to the court, is maintain status quo till the court's verdict and the further orders," an official from Aurangabad Collectorate told IANS. After the state government's proposal got the Central approval, several individuals and organisations, besides political parties including the AIMIM and others have given a legal challenge to the name change from Aurangabad to 'Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar' and the cases are now subjudice.
