The 60 Best Animated Movies, Ranked – IndieWire

The genre has grown so much since we entered the current century, in fact, that it can be easy to forget the Academy Awards didn’t even recognize animation until 2001. As few as three movies were nominated per year until 2010, but since then animation’s increased prominence has been reflected in the race’s competitiveness. Next year seems like it’ll be a banner time for the category, with some big contenders in the wings. There’s the smash hit In honor of the release of one of those contenders, the exquisite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”—co-written by genre champions Lord and Miller with “Shang Chi” screenwriter David Callaham — we’ve updated our list of the best animated films of the century, with a variety of new entries we’ve overlooked and the gems that have come out since our last update. Kate Erbland, David Ehrlich, Christian Blauvelt, Steve Greene, Eric Kohn, Jude Dry, Chris O’Falt, Anne Thompson, Zack Sharf, Noel Murray, Jenna Marotta, Michael Nordine, Ryan Lattanzio, Alison Foreman, and Christian Zilko alsocontribu ted to this list. 60. “Encanto” (2021) Disney’s animated movies have adopted the structure and feel of Broadway musicals off and on since “The Little Mermaid” in 1989 (if not earlier); but “Encanto” may be the studio’s most Broadway-like production. With its story-driven, free-ranging Lin-Manuel Miranda songs — framed by Germain Franco’s Latin-steeped score — and its plot largely confined to one magical house in a remote Colombian village, the f...

30 Best Disney movies of all time, from Lion King to Pocahontas

The best Disney movies of all time are difficult to rank. These are the adventures of our collective childhoods – few people have not watched at least one of Walt Disney's classics at some stage in their life. Therefore, coming up with any list of the greatest Disney films is a challenge as we all have such strong attachments to them. And yet, we are standing before you (figuratively) with a list of the best Disney movies ever. Frankly, there were some bonafide great movies that had to be let go of, while the majority of recent releases (the live-action remakes in particular) just weren't up to scratch with the House of Mouse's finest work. We also kept this list just to the "main" Disney canon, AKA we did not include the With all that in mind, these are our picks for the best disney movies – and for more, be sure to check out our pieces on the (Image credit: Disney) Disney had long toyed with the idea of making an animated Romeo and Juliet, so, when legendary director Mike Gabriel pitched Pocahontas, the movie was greenlit almost immediately. The story is loosely based on the life of a real Native American woman and her encounter with an English colonialist called John Smith. However, the adaptation received a mixed reception for its treatment of Powhatan culture. Some Native Americans claim Pocahontas distorts history, while others praise it for being one of the first instances where popular culture acknowledges the brutal intentions of English settlers wiping out indige...

32 Best Animated Movies of All Time

I've been thinking a lot lately about how the live-action Mulan is set to Lion King. But what is it about these remakes that spark such a visceral reaction? Is it pure nostalgia or is there something magical about animation that's impossible to replicate with humans and CGI...unless you're Beyoncé? Here, we've put together a collection of the 30 best animated films of all time—and they're definitely not just for kids. It's incredible to think that Disney's psychedelic explosion of vignettes was released in 1940—think about all the labor that went into translating this kind of magic to the big screen. Fantasia really is pure magic, with spectacular dancing hippos, centaurs, and a score featuring Bach and Tchaikovsky. Then, of course, there's Mickey Mouse and the brooms that almost drown him—a nightmarish yet somehow still delightful segment that remains the film's most iconic. Fantasia , the precursor to future psychedelic animations, lingers in the mind like an acid trip. Fantasia is just child's play compared to this long-lost psychosexual fever dream from Japanese director Eiichi Yamamoto, which was inspired by French writer Jules Michelet's feminist witchcraft book, La Sorciere . Too X-rated for its own good, Belladonna failed to find popular footing upon its release, even shuttering its parent studio. But with a 2016 U.S. release—more than four decades later—this curious work found a new cult following, and a new audience to scandalize (it is rather shocking, even by m...
