Sher Shivraj Movie Review: An interesting but not entirely effective retelling of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Two months after the release of his previous film, Pawankhind, director Digpal Lanjekar is back to unfold the next chapter in his series of eight films on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, with Sher Shivraj. The film is a dramatic retelling of Shivaji Maharaj and his Maratha army’s first major triumph, at the Battle of Pratapgad, which also resulted in the death of Afzalkhan, the general of the Bijapur Sultanate’s army. The story of Afzalkhan’s tyranny and his attempt to kill Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is well known. This chapter from Maratha history has found its way in numerous other projects before but given Lanjekar’s repertoire, it’s obvious that watching this unfold on the big screen will bring a different experience. On that front, the director doesn’t disappoint. Chinmay Mandlekar has mastered the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and in this film too, he brings his top game and stands out among the huge star cast. Mukesh Rishi as Afzalkhan is another standout performer. He channels the rage of the character so well that it angers you as well. It’s a menacing performance from the seasoned actor. Other actors who shine are Sameer Dharmadhikari, Ajay Purkar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Vaibhav Mangle, Isha Keskar and Lanjekar himself in the role of Bahirji Naik. While some scenes bank on too much drama and theatrics, these actors take the experience of watching this film a notch higher. At the same time, when you know a story as popular as this, watching it unfold over a span of ...

Shri Shivraj Ashtak — The Movie Database (TMDB)

Maharashtra has a very well known history and in that, the period of Shivaji Maharaj is of pride to us all. Adilshah from Bijapur was the strongest enemy of Shivaji Maharaj and the ruler of Konkan and Maharashtra. Shivaji established Swaraj in these parts and set the people free from Adilshah's slavery. And hence, he became Shivaji's biggest enemy. Adilshah later, declared a war against Shivaji Maharaj and captured the Panhala fort. After several attempts for recapturing the fort, Shivaji Maharaj failed. Adilshah, being a tricky politician, appointed the brutal Beshakh Khan as the guardian of the fort. The illegal and immoral acts of Beshakh Khan was against Swaraj and a hurdle for the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj. To stop him and capture the fort of Panhala was now an issue of prestige for Shivaji Maharaj. Farzand is the movie about Shivaji Maharaj's 60 great warriors lead by Kondaji Farzand, which portrays their great achievements in capturing Panhala fort.

Pawankhind Movie Review: An epic retelling of an interesting chapter from Maratha history

After Farzand and Fatteshikast, Digpal Lanjekar’s first two movies in the series of films dedicated to the bravery of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha army, the writer-director returns with a bang in the third film of the series – Pawankhind. The film, which was delayed due to the pandemic, is based on one of the most famous incidents from Maratha history – the Battle of Pavan Khind. At the outset, the makers make it clear that this is not a complete documentation of the battle, its prelude or aftermath, but a cinematic recreation meant to showcase the bravery of the Marathas involved in this battle. So, there are cinematic liberties taken in this retelling, but the crux of the story is maintained. The story about the Battle of Pavan Khind (earlier known as Ghod Khind) and the bravery displayed by Bajiprabhu Deshpande and the Bandal army of 600 against the Siddhi Masud and the soldiers of the Adilshahi Sultanate is well known across Maharashtra. The result – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s successful escape from Panhalgad to Vishalgad. But, does Lanjekar succeed in recreating this important chapter from Marathi history on screen? Absolutely! Pawankhind is a thorough cinematic experience that is fit for the big screen. The film is ambitious in trying to explore this story in two and a half hours, but it largely succeeds in creating the right build up and ambience that leads to a fantastic climax. From laying out the reason and the characters involved in it, to the ...
