Chhello Show gets Oscar nod, makers of RRR still hopeful

Contrary to the popular consensus on a nod for RRR or The Kashmir Files, Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film Chhello Show (titled The Last Film Show in English) has been named India’s official choice for Best International Feature at the upcoming 95th Academy Awards. Pan Nalin’s Chhello Show is set against the backdrop of cinemas in India that saw the transition from celluloid to digital. “I could have never imagined such a day would come. Now, I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens,” Nalin said on the honour for his film, which is set against the backdrop of cinemas in India that saw the transition from celluloid to digital. However, this move by the Film Federation of India (FFI) has also seemingly upset a section of cinegoers rooting for films such as RRR and The Kashmir Files. The same was evident on social media as well, with #RRRForOscars trending within no time. Reacting to the chatter on the FFI’s decision, director-actor TS Nagabharana, who served as the head of the committee of selection for the Oscars, revealed Chhello Show was picked “unanimously” by a 17-member jury. “We know everyone was expecting RRR. But, the idea was to have a film that represents the country in an Indian, unique way. Chhello Show transcends the narrative of the regular Indian reality in a broader sense, while tugging on emotional chords,” he says. On the RRR snub, he adds, “Do people mean to say only marketing, entertainment value or collection figure are...

Chhello Show Review: Pan Nalin's ode to cinema is a winner, Oscar or not. But Oscar, please

By Shweta Keshri: "The future belongs to storytellers," Fazal tells (played by Bhavesh Shrimali) Samay (played by Bhavin Rabari) in Chhello Show, a film which is all about telling stories. Where the protagonist, a 9-year-old boy, manages to hold the interest of his friends with his brilliant storytelling skills, using colourful matchboxes. Director Pan Nalin's protagonist in Chhello Show, 9-year-old Samay, is fascinated by films. He loves watching movies and wants to be a filmmaker. While Samay can eat, breathe and live films, his father (played by Dipen Raval) is strictly against cinema, as he believes it corrupts people. So, the only film that he took Samay to watch in the theatres was a devotional film, but little did he know that this would form a never-ending bond between his son and cinema. The film was just the beginning. The flickering light coming from the projection room fascinates Samay to no end. So much so that when he gets to see it up close, he is in awe of it and later, when he is reunited with the projector after a break, goes on to even hug it. Chhello Show is part autobiographical, as Samay's story draws inspiration from Pan Nalin's own life. Much like Samay's father, Pan Nalin's father also sold tea at the train station. Nalin also stole cinema reels, befriended a projectionist and watched films in exchange for the sumptous Kathiawadi food prepared by his mother. Chhello Show is set in 2010, a time when India and most other countries replaced 35mm film ...
