This fort has got one of the best-planned architecture that is best suited for a luxurious lifestyle and also has an advantageous position from the warfare point of view. Once an indomitable fort, this fort eventually fell into the hands of the Mughals who have practically ravaged the entire fort apart. However, the very few architectural remains, that stand even today with their heads held high out of sheer pride and honour, display the grandeur of the Rajput rulers of Mewar. Associated with the heart-wrenching legend of Rani Padmini, this fort has occupied a soft corner in the hearts of every Indian. Thus, as a Traveller Tips • Wear comfortable shoes as you will be required to walk a lot through the ruins of the fort. • Beware of monkeys! Chittorgarh Fort

Everything about the Chittorgarh hill fort, a rock island that rises steeply from the plains, is on a colossal scale. The half-mile ascent through seven gates takes you almost 500 feet up to a plateau that’s nearly four miles long. The fort covers the entire plateau, encompassing a village, a reservoir, several active temples, and countless deserted, sublimely beautiful ruins. There’s so much to see here, including the remains of ancient palaces, temples, and towers built between the 8th and 16th centuries in a wide variety of architectural styles. Many are shrouded in stories and legends. Near the crumbling 15th-century Palace of Rana Kumbha are the exquisite Meera and Kumbha Shyam Temples. The smaller Meera Temple was built for Princess Meerabai, a 16th-century mystic poet who to this day is considered a legendary figure. After the death of Princess Meerabai’s husband, the crown prince, her in-laws attempted to murder her, but she credited her survival to Lord Krishna’s intervention. Henceforth, she devoted her life to Krishna, and left the palace to wander among the holy men of North Other key sites include Padmini’s Palace and the lavishly carved Vijay Stambh, or Tower of Victory, the symbol of Chittorgarh. Visitors can climb to the top, rising over 100 feet up a set of dark narrow stairs. Padmini’s Palace is in a slightly dilapidated state, but you can still stand inside and see the serene pavilion, surrounded by a small pool in the center of the fort, where Sultan Al...

Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort is one of those places I simply had to visit in India after seeing just 1 single photo. The temple looked like something out of this world with its intricate details and the water bassin below reflecting all of that beauty and the lush greenery. The Chittorgarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India and considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So when I figured out I could perfectly fit a short visit to Chittorgarh into my Rajasthan itinerary I was absolutely over the moon. After out adventures in Pushkar we jumped into our car and on the way down to Udaipur we were able to make a stop at one of the most beautiful forts in the entire world! RAJASTHAN IS FILLED WITH STUNNING FORTS & PALACES AND I WROTE A DETAILED GUIDE WITH TONS OF PHOTOS & DETAILS – Chittorgarh Fort – Visit The Most Beautiful Fort in India To be completely honest I was a little disappointed. Not because the fort itself wasn’t as beautiful in real life as I would have imagined. But because I completely chose the wrong time of year and of day to visit this iconic place. Due to circumstances I had planned my trip through Rajasthan at the start of May. If you’ve ever visited this area in India during that time you know that the sun will be scorching hot and reach daily temperatures up to 45°C. And since we were visiting Chittorgarh Fort on our way to Udaipur we arrived in the middle of the day. Not the best combination if you’re not all that good with dealing with the heat! Something I hadn...

In 1869, the Ingalls' family moved to this location, 12 miles southwest of Independence, Kansas. They stayed here about a year before returning to their earlier home in Pepin, Wisconsin. Laura Ingalls Wilder was only 3 when the family lived in Kansas, but when she started writing the "Little House" books, she based Little House on the Prairie on memories of her older family members: Pa, Ma, and Mary. The Michael Landon television series Little House on the Prairie was not set at this location, but at Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where the family moved in 1874. The small Little House on the Prairie cabin at this location is a recreation based on the description found in the book. The foundation of a small house believed to have been the home of the Ingalls' family, was found at this location in 1977. Two original buildings from the same time period have moved next to the reconstructed Little House on the Prairie. The interiors of all three buildings can be toured. There is no direct connection between any of these buildings and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Many visitors will need only a few minutes t...

Chittorgarh Fort Chittorgarh

The Chittorgarh Fort has witnessed three bloody sieges and 'jauhars' (a Rajput tradition in which royal maidens and ladies immolate themselves in the fire to save their honor from the cruel hands of the enemy, when there is no chance of defeating the enemy). The walls and the atmosphere is still haunted with the gloom of despair, valiant pride of the Rajput queens and ladies and sheer zeal and bravery of their men who refused to cow down before the enemy. The Rajput style of architecture is clearly visible in the fort, which is said to be the Gahlot and Sisodia ruler of Mewar from the 8th to the 16th century. Named after Chittrangad Mauraya, the magnificent fort rises 150 m above the surrounding region and runs to an approximate length of 3 km covering an area of 60 acres and peripheral length of 13 km. The legend says that when the talks of Rani Padmini's beauty reched the years of Sultan Alauddin Khilji, the powerful ruler of Delhi, he requested her husband, Rana Rattan Singh, for a glimpse of the queen. Though, it went against the honor code of Rajputs, yet he was allowed to get a glimpse of the queen through the reflection of the queen in a water tank that overlooked the palace. Alauddin, then, had the audacity to attack Chittor to gain her possession. He won the war but lost Rani Padmini who committed 'jauhar' to save her honor. The entrance of the Chittorgarh has seven massive gates, the two towers known as the 'Kirti Stambh' (Tower of Fame) and the 'Vijay Stambh' (T...
