'Stronger' Dinesh Chandimal says family, friends got him through tough times

GALLE: Former Sri Lanka captain Chandimal, 32, hit an attacking 76 in Sri Lanka's 222 all out on day one of the opening Test against Pakistan in Galle to lead his team's fightback. His knock comes after an unbeaten 206 -- his maiden Test double century -- set up a series-levelling win over Australia earlier this week. "You have got to be mentally strong if you are playing Test cricket," said Chandimal, who averages more than 42 in 68 Tests, after an absorbing day's play. "I have been out of the side at times. That makes me stronger. You have to score runs to remain in the side. So I thought about the technique and how to keep myself not distracted and grab the opportunity when it came." Chandimal has had a rough time after being sacked as Sri Lanka skipper in 2019 following his team's thrashing in Australia. The senior batsman has since failed to secure a regular place in the side in all formats, but his recent return to form has allowed him to reflect on his struggles. "You need help during those tough times. I get a lot of support from my family, my wife, coaches, team mates and my friends. I am glad I got that," he said. "When you are down you need support like that. If people are criticising it's difficult. We don't want to fail and we need support. Happy that I contributed." Chandimal put on 44 runs for the ninth wicket with Maheesh Theekshana, who made 38 and added 89 runs for the last two wickets after Sri Lanka were had been tottering at 133-8. "Not happy with what...

Dinesh Chandimal powers Sri Lanka's lead past 300 against Pakistan in first Test

GALLE (Sri Lanka): Red hot Dinesh Chandimal struck his second successive half-century to take Sri Lanka's lead past 300 and thwart the Pakistan attack on day three of the opening Test on Monday. The hosts were 329 for nine when bad light stopped play for the day in Galle. Chandimal, on 86, and Prabath Jayasuriya, on four, were batting at close of play with Sri Lanka leading by 333 in their second innings. Mohammad Nawaz claimed his maiden five-wicket haul and combined with fellow spinner Yasir Shah, who took three, to rattle the opposition middle-order in the second session. But Chandimal, who struck blazing form with his maiden double century -- 206 not out -- in his team's series-levelling Test win over Australia last week, stood firm in another lower-order show of defiance after the hosts slipped to 235-7. He reached his fifty and put on 41 runs with Maheesh Theekshana for the ninth wicket in a repeat performance from the hosts, who had hit back from 133-8 to post 222 in their first innings. Earlier Kusal Mendis made 76 and opener Oshada Fernando scored 64 and put on a key third-wicket stand of 91 to fight back after an early wicket in the morning session. Oshada reached his sixth Test fifty in the first session but fell to Yasir on the second ball after lunch. Kusal raised his fifty and took on the opposition attack with a few boundaries before Yasir bowled him with an unplayable delivery that pitched outside leg and turned to hit the top of off stump. Nawaz, who is ma...

Sri Lanka build lead through Chandimal ton as Australia searches for answers

If Australia had a drawing board in their dressing room, there’s every chance it was smeared with chalk as they went back to it again and again on a grinding day in the field as Sri Lanka built a first innings lead of 67 on day three in Galle. Very little worked for Pat Cummins as he tried plans ‘a’ through to at least ‘g’, whether it involved changing fields or bowlers, turning to part-time spinners or settling on bursts of pace. Australia weren’t helped by a couple of missed stumpings by Alex Carey and it proved costly when they burned through their reviews and were left with no recourse when the DRS would otherwise have rewarded the bowlers’ toil. And on the subject of burning, Nathan Lyon’s immense tally of 56 overs so far in this match could threaten to burn him out; at one point he hobbled off the field to receive treatment for cramp. Lyon was just one player looking for guidance. The offspinner could be seen in sober conversation with head spin coach Daniel Vettori on the boundary several times throughout the day. But even before play there were huddles between coach Andrew McDonald and the bowling attack, a full team huddle on the pitch, and plenty of seemingly deep and meaningful exchanges between Cummins and vice-captain Steve Smith. But this was just one side of the equation. Sri Lanka forced the introspection by simply batting sensibly and taking few risks. Dinesh Chandimal’s brilliant century — he was unbeaten on 118 at stumps — was the headline but the suppor...

Dinesh Chandimal Makes Double Century After Edging Behind On 30 With Australia All Out Of Reviews

Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal was crucially given a life on 30 when he was wrongly adjudged to have not edged behind off Mitchell Starc before going on to score a career-best 206*, during Australia’s defeat to Sri Lanka in the second Test in Galle. Replays showed that Chandimal had in fact edged the short ball from Starc through to wicket-keeper Alex Carey, but with Australia having already used all three reviews, Chandimal was reprieved. He went on to play the leading role for Sri Lanka as they compiled a match-winning first-innings advantage of 180 runs. The event shone a light on Australia’s poor use of their reviews, having lost all three in the space of 36 overs before the second new ball arrived. Teams currently have three reviews, as opposed to two to which they previously were entitled during Covid-19. However, before they could use one against Chandimal, Australia were out of their three reviews: first, when appealing for a catch down the legside to Dimuth Karunaratne, before two unsuccessful LBW reviews in consecutive Nathan Lyon overs to Angelo Mathews and Chandimal. Australia were almost immediately left to rue their lack of reviews, as ten overs later, from the bowling of Lyon, Mathews was given not out LBW before replays showed it was ‘three reds’. Just three more overs passed until Australia were once again cursing their review-less situation, as the vital Chandimal decision was made. In the space of two sessions of cricket, Australia had used all three of th...

After Three Lost Years, Can Dinesh Chandimal Finally Be Sri Lanka's Main Man?

After going through a three-year period of silence, Dinesh Chandimal might have found a second wind in his Test career, one that could push his stature higher than it has ever been, writes Aadya Sharma. Dinesh Chandimal has seen much better days in Sri Lanka cricket. His first Test was a landmark one – Sri Lanka’s first-ever win in South Africa – achieved through a thumping 208-run knockout in Durban. The 22-year-old debutant made handsome contributions, scoring twin fifties from No.7, but it was overshadowed by centuries in either innings from the bigwigs, Kumar Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera. It would have been easy to feel lost in a line-up that also included Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews. More than a decade later, Chandimal is one of the senior figures. Mathews is still around, but the rest of the starry cast is long gone, leaving in its wake a brittle batting future. Sri Lanka are not the team they once used to be, and part of the problem is how those earmarked to be future giants could never quite make it that big. Chandimal has been one of Sri Lanka’s leading men through the transition, but hasn’t been able to quite extend the good into the great. He’s hit 13 centuries in 68 Tests – two more, and he’ll be into Sri Lanka’s top five – but the big ones have often been preceded and succeeded by a string of half-baked scores. The array of low scores turned into a full-blown lean patch over the past three years: his average in 2019, 2020 a...
