Huma Qureshi plays Rajshri Trivedi, a woman from Meerut who wants to become a sports presenter even as her mother brings her one match after another. Sonakshi Sinha is Saira Khanna, a fashion designer who is on the cusp of having her own label (if all goes well) and is dating the most stereotypical Delhi gym-bro possible. On their dream-achieving quest they meet Srikanth (Mahat Raghavendra), the weed-loving, dorky cameraman for Saira’s lookbook shot and later Zoravar (Zaheer Iqbal), the line producer. The conversation that Double XL is having about fatphobia and body shaming seems decent at first but soon devolves into winding cliches. That’s the film’s major flaw – in an attempt to make a film that isn’t taking itself too seriously, the makers seemed to forget that the topic they’re tackling is, in fact, very serious and deserves a depth that is missing. Both Sonakshi and Huma give convincing performances with the latter being almost impossible to look away from when she’s on screen. Their chemistry together is palpable and it truly seems like they’re both comfortable with each other, which works for the film. And while Mahat as Srikanth is endearing (despite the character being chock full of tropes and a saviour complex), Zoravar is downright disturbing. One of his “quirks” is him constantly hitting on Saira and at one point insinuates that she’s trapped with him in the room because she ‘can’t run away’ (yes, it’s a sexual assault ‘joke’...

Express News Service Political correctness can crop up in the weirdest of places. In the 2017 Telugu hit Arjun Reddy, the lunkhead hero disparagingly labels a college junior ‘fat chick’. When the film was remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh, the phrasing was changed to ‘healthy chick’. Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga and lead star Shahid Kapoor probably figured that saying ‘fat chick’ in a contemporary mainstream Hindi film would be going too far. So they toned it down in a sensitive story about shooting up drugs after slapping your girlfriend. Satram Ramani’s new film Double XL does not bother with such politesse. “I’m overweight,” retorts Rajshri (Huma Qureshi), sharply upbraiding a prospective groom who tries trading in euphemisms. An aspiring sports presenter from Meerut, Rajshri has her ears perked for cruelty—whether in the casual dismissal of a stranger or the extended scoldings of her mum, who blames her daughter for not slimming up to look marriageable enough. “Tees lag gaya hai tumko (you’re pushing thirty),” she sobs, as though describing the onset of a disease. With her mother’s (begrudging) permission, Rajshri arrives in Delhi hoping to land a presenter’s post at a big sports channel. More of an essay on body-shaming than a piece of cinema, Double XL is yet another example of good intentions leading to a drab film. The makers seem so focused on raising the issue and reflecting diversity on screen, that they seem to have forgotten that the noble idea needs to be packaged into a compelling story as well. In its current shape, it reads like a newspaper feature on fat-shaming which invariably starts with a case study. Here we have two. Rajshri Trivedi (Huma Qureshi) is a healthy girl from Meerut who wants to become a sports presenter. However, her mother is keen on finding her a suitable match, and the channel she aspires to join hires people on the basis of their body statistics. Saira Khanna (Sonakshi Sinha) is an aspiring designer, whose body weight comes in the way of her relationships and confidence. They coincidently meet each, and fly to London where they shed the baggage of social pressures, and along the way, discover two interesting boys who understand them.
