Manville Bro Obituary Manville I. "Whitey" Bro Age 88, died of natural causes at his home at Shipley Manor, Wilmington, DE, on August 4, 2011. One of twelve children of Danish immigrant parents, Dr. Bro grew up on a farm in Audubon County, Iowa. After attending rural and town public schools, he completed his Bachelors Degree at the University of Northern Iowa (then Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls), and went on to earn a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry at The University of Iowa (Iowa City). During World War II, Dr. Bro attained the rank of Second Lieutenant in the 706th Tank Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division while serving in the Philippines. Upon returning to UI graduate school, he met Marjorie Ann Fontana of Cleveland, OH, who was pursuing her Masters Degree in Spanish. They married on July 9, 1949 and had three daughters. In 1951, Dr. Bro joined the E.I. DuPont and Nemours Company (Wilmington, DE) as a research scientist and helped discover Teflon FEP and other new fluoropolymer products. He held twelve US and several foreign patents for his discoveries in this field, and authored twelve technical papers on fluoropolymers and fluorine chemistry. During his 34 years with DuPont, Dr. Bro became Research, Product, and Development Manager for several Teflon-related products, and cooperated with the WL Gore Company in their development of a fluoropolymer resin for Goretex textiles.
