Driver Jamuna Movie Review: Aishwarya Rajesh tries her best to save this hastily written road thriller

Driver Jamuna Movie Synopsis: Jamuna, a cab driver, finds herself in trouble when three contract killers get in for a ride. Can she save herself from this horrific situation? Driver Jamuna Movie Review: Saving the best for the last might work if the initial set up is good enough to hold interest. But when you expect the viewers to wait patiently throughout only to appreciate the last act, it's not a fair deal. Driver Jamuna is a thriller that tries way too hard to give the audience an immersive experience. However, minimal conflicts and superficial moments makes it a predictable ride with nothing to take back home. In the very first scene, we are introduced to Jamuna (Aishwarya Rajesh), a passionate cab driver, and her mother, who is partially paralysed. They have a past and everything is kept a secret. As of now, all we know is Jamuna's late father was also a cabbie and her brother is currently working in Bangalore as a software engineer. Soon, what looks like a regular day at work becomes a nightmare of sorts for Jamuna. She takes up a ride that puts her life in trouble. Three people, one of whom is a drug addict, book her cab for a ride from Chengalpattu to East Coast Road. Abhishek, an aspiring musician, too, joins them on ride-sharing basis. Things take a turn when Jamuna gets a call from local cops, who tell her that the three men she is traveling with are contract killers and most-wanted criminals. Parallely, we also get introduced to ex-MLA Maragadhavel (Aadukalam ...

'Driver Jamuna' Movie Review: The Aishwarya Rajesh

Express News Service There are zillions of genderbiased stereotypes that continue to be perpetrated for decades together. Two of the most common and archaic labels are Women can’t read maps, and women are bad drivers — and as always, the onus is put on women to break these stereotypes. The latest attempt to break the aforementioned stereotype is driver Jamuna, the titular character in Aishwarya Rajesh’s latest. She not only is a walking-talking city route map but can also do a 360-degree skid like a pro. Okay, Driver Jamuna is not a proclamation that women are good drivers, but the point is it doesn’t have to be spelt out so either. Director Kinslin normalising women cab drivers and not harping on the novelty of it is in itself a move in the right direction. Interestingly, Kinslin’s previous film, Vathikuchi (2013), also featured a driver at the centre of things. If Vathikuchi was about an auto driver, Driver Jamuna follows a cab driver who takes up this male-dominated profession after her father passes away. Yes, we have father sentiment scenes, but they just come as flashes, and don’t really tug at our emotional chords. One of the interesting aspects of Driver Jamuna is that the story transpires in less than 2 hours, and this is reflected in the film’s runtime too. Driver Jamuna, which aims to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller, revolves around Jamuna, who is inadvertently caught in a quagmire after a bunch of henchmen become her cab passengers. How she escapes from the mes...
