This park shares borders with Nepal forests so sometimes Resident Rhinos and Tigers crisscross the borders. an amazing spectacle awaits in this abundance of flora and fauna Dudwha National Park forms part of the Dudwha Tiger Reserve. It is not very well known and so is not often very busy. This may account for its unspoilt condition - it is an outstanding experience just to visit. We saw only a handful of other safari jeeps on our visit and so you will get a good view of wildlife when you find it. This is a poor part of India and so the Park facilities are basic but it is rich in natural beauty and wildlife. We saw numerous species of birds (large and small), wild boars, many species of deer and an excellent example of a peacock in full colourful plumage. The high light of this visit was the safari on elephant back, through tall elephant grasses to see the one horned rhino which has only recently been reintroduced into the area. We were lucky as we went the day before heavy rains which closed the park to protect the environment. We stayed at the outstanding Jaagir Lodge which is about a forty minute drive away. Legendary conservationist Arjan Singh - “Billy” as he was popularly known, passed away on 1 January 2010, at the age of 92. For more than 70 years, he battled to secure a safe future for tigers in India. In 1988, his efforts led to the establishment of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve – among the world’s finest tiger habitat. “Billy” was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on 15 August 1917, and raised in the then princely state of Balrampur. His father, Jasbir Singh, came from the royal family of Kapurthala, and served as a Special Manager for the nominal ruler of Balrampur, then still a minor. Billy’s love for wildlife was abundantly evident from his childhood days. Though he started as a hunter, by the time he was thirty, he gave up shikar and thereafter devoted his entire life to the conservation of wildlife. Conservation was a little known concept in the years directly following India’s independence - few having heard or paid any heed to it. But for Billy it had become a passion. Reluctant to be separated from this area of the Terai and its animals, Billy decided to abjure any occupation which would take him away from this beloved land and its animals. It is a fact universally acknowledged that for a road trip from Delhi, one must leave before the crack of dawn, drive fearlessly in the face of beams as high as the sun, and cross every NCR road by sunrise. We followed the same rule of thumb, last Sunday. Our destination was some 450km away and required us to drive on Uttar Pradesh (Bareilly and Pilibhit Roads to be exact) state highways for 200km. After a long but not too arduous drive, we reached the lodge that was going to be our home for the next two days in the Terai forests of Uttar Pradesh. The fascinating landscape consists of two distinct zones. First is Bhabar, a hilly terrain with coarse alluvium and boulders combined with incomparable Sal Tree vegetation. Second, is the unique Terai terrain, which is rich in clay swamps and decorated by tall grassland. The Terai is part of the world's most important eco-regions due to the large mammal assemblage observed in the area. With the Mohana River in north and Suheli River in south, the national park has one of the highest density of endangered animals and birds in the world.
