A Northwestern Medicine cardiologist explains what you need to know about an EKG. Basics of the Heart Your heart has four main chambers: a right and left atrium, and a right and left ventricle. The right side of your heart, which includes your right atrium and right ventricle, takes in blood that is depleted of oxygen and pumps it to your lungs. The left atrium then receives the oxygen-rich blood from your lungs and, with the help of your left ventricle, pumps this blood throughout your body to deliver oxygen to your cells. As your blood moves through your body, your cells remove its oxygen. Oxygen-poor blood then returns to the right side of your heart, which sends it back to the lungs, and the cycle continues.
