Escape From Alcatraz: June 11, 1962

Originally built as a naval defense fortification in the 1850s, the facility on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay housed military prisoners from 1861 to 1933, after which the U.S. Army transferred control to the Department of Justice. The new federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island opened in 1934 and was considered the toughest prison America could produce. A maximum-security, minimum-privilege facility for the most hardened and unrepentant criminals in the U.S. prison system, Alcatraz represented the government’s attempt to take a hard-line stance against the rampant crime of the 1920s and ‘30s. During its 29 years in operation (1934-63), the prison housed some of the country’s most notorious bad guys, including Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Alvin Karpis (designated the first “Public Enemy #1”) and “Birdman” Robert Stroud. (Credit: Pictorial Parade/Getty Images) Frank Morris arrived on Alcatraz Island in January 1960, as inmate #AZ-1441. Convicted of his first crime at the age of 13, Morris had spent much of his life behind bars, serving time for offenses ranging from narcotics possession to armed robbery. With a reported I.Q. of more than 130, Morris also had a history of trying to break out of prisons; it was this habit that eventually landed him at “The Rock,” as Alcatraz had been dubbed long before its days as a federal prison. ...

Was the Escape from Alcatraz Successful?

It was one of the most ingenious But what happened next has stumped historians for decades. Their bodies were never recovered, leaving many wondering whether they perished in the choppy San Francisco Bay or made it to shore—and freedom. In the years since nearly six decades of silence from the men led many to conclude that CBS San Francisco published an extract of a letter addressed to the FBI that told an altogether different story—and claimed that the criminals had been at large since the 1960s. “My name is John Anglin,” it read. “I escape[d] from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I’m 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes, we all made it that night but barely!” The letter was sent to the San Francisco Police Department’s Richmond station in 2013, the broadcaster reported but had been kept under wraps during a long investigation. An FBI laboratory examined the letter for fingerprints and DNA and analyzed the handwriting within, but the results were inconclusive. “So that means yes, and it means no, so this leaves everything in limbo,” security analyst Jeff Harp In the letter, the writer explained that he was the last living member of the trio, with his co-conspirators dying in 2005 and 2008. He offered a deal: If authorities announced on television that he would receive a single one-year jail sentence, in which he could have the medical treatment he needed, “I will write back to let you know exactly where I am. This is no joke…” ...

The escape from Alcatraz, 60 years later

Good morning, and welcome to the Essential California Monday, June 20. I’m Justin Ray. Three men escaped from notorious Alcatraz Island penitentiary in 1962 and have never been apprehended. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Investigations site has published age-progressed images of the men (seen above), who would be in their 90s. Frank Morris, John Anglin, and his brother, Clarence Anglin have never been located since escaping the facility — which was at some point home to criminals like Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and In the years since it took place, authorities have uncovered several surprising details about how they pulled it off. I thought I would give you some interesting information and photos from the escape. The escape, and clues about what happened to the men (U.S. Marshals) On June 12, 1962, prison staff conducted a routine morning check of beds when they noticed the three convicts were not in their cells. Instead, their beds were occupied by dummy heads made of plaster, flesh-tone paint, and real human hair that apparently deceived the night guards. The prison was immediately put into lockdown, and the search began. (U.S. Marshals) A hollow space above the cell block was used as a storage area for tools and the decoy heads, which they made out of barbershop hair, plaster and paint. They fashioned a makeshift inflatable raft out of 50 prison-issued WWII-era raincoats, cotton with rubber backing. During the escape, each man wriggled through a chiseled shaft in...

Alcatraz escape of June 1962

A guard making a routine cellblock head count on the early morning of June 12, 1962, came upon three inmates apparently still sleeping in their cells. Further investigation revealed that the “inmates” were in fact dummy heads, made from painted Frank Morris and the convicted bank-robbing brothers Clarence and John Anglin—were nowhere to be found. The guard raised the alarm, and the warden in charge promptly notified state and federal authorities as well as the U.S. military. An intensive manhunt began. In the cells of the missing men, guards discovered that grille openings in the No one was known to have successfully escaped from Alcatraz—located some 1.5 miles (2 km) offshore, in Allen West, an inmate who was an active participant but had failed to get out of his cell in time to join the others. West helped build both the raft and rubber life jackets, using a makeshift It is fairly certain that Morris and the Anglins escaped from Alcatraz Island, but it is not known whether they successfully escaped to the mainland. Fragments of their rubber equipment were found on or near Angel Island, a former immigration station that was their intended intermediate destination. From Angel Island the men had intended to swim to the Marin county mainland, according to West, and then steal new clothes from a retail store. However, no such crime was reported. Some

The Warden discovers that Doc has painted a portrait of him, as well as other guards on the island itself. The petty and thin skinned Warden is enraged. In retaliation, he arbitrarily and permanently removes Doc's painting privileges. Doc pleads with the guard that he has nothing left to live for without...
