Gangubai Kathiawadi review

H ere is a luxuriously sleazy-sentimental melodrama about the Mumbai underworld, directed with gusto by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the powerhouse Bollywood film-maker who 20 years ago had a Bafta nomination for his mighty epic Devdas. It is an adaptation from a tale in the true-crime reportage bestseller Alia Bhatt plays Gangubai, the innocent provincial girl who dreams of movie stardom and believes the sinister smoothie boyfriend luring her to the big city. Then she is imprisoned, raped and savagely brutalised in the brothel, but becomes a kind of unofficial union rep for the other women and pleads for justice from a local chieftain of city politics: Karim Lala (Ajay Devgn) to whom she extends the brothel’s onsite booze franchise in return. And so her upward climb begins, which involves a political duel with a rival, trans madam Raziabai, played by Vijay Raaz. This fictionalised version omits any violence in which Gangubai was reportedly involved and drugs are demurely replaced with alcohol being sold on the premises; when Gangubai finally evolves from being a mafia queen into a revered Mother India figure, blessed by smiling sex workers all around Gangubai Kathiawadi is released on 25 February in cinemas.

Hussain Zaidi. Gangubai follows its eponymous character, a young woman from a well-to-do family tricked by her lover and sold into sexual slavery. Rather than let her situation break her spirit, Gangubai reinvents herself and assumes command of the brothel she’s been imprisoned inside, eventually rising to impressive political and socioeconomic power and freeing other young women from forced sex work. “I didn’t know that she existed,” Bhansali says. “I lived one lane away from the brothels of Mumbai where this film is based, but I had no idea that the woman called Gangubai actually existed. When I read the story, it was quite a revelation to me. I said, ‘Oh my god, this is a fantastic character.’ It’s a very pure character. It’s a character that I enjoyed reading, because she was funny, she was witty, she was a fighter. She knew how to handle the dark moments. She was like sunshine in the brothel. And so I found that it’s a very unusual take on an unusual character. Otherwise, normally, yo...

Gangubai Kathiawadi review

A rowdy, wayward Hindi crime drama set in the red light district of 1960s Mumbai, Gangubai Kathiawadi may romanticise its central character – sex worker turned madam turned advocate and campaigner Gangu (Alia Bhatt) – but the film takes a razor blade to the cosier conventions of the melodrama. This is hard-hitting stuff. Gangu is trafficked into prostitution by a man she loved. But within a year in her new life, she realises that she has power. Bidi cigarette dangling from her lip, armed with a bottle of sugarcane alcohol and a cool, appraising gaze that turns grown men into snivelling boys, Gangu is magnetic, an all-too-rare female antihero. And Bhatt is terrific, tearing through the film, her performance gathering momentum, as respect, desire and a certain amount of fear flickers in the eyes of those around her. Loosely based on a real-life woman, featured in the nonfiction book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, this is a broad brushstrokes portrait, but it’s robustly entertaining stuff from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali (
