Fish Gills

Fish breathe through gills instead of lungs. Just like all other animals, fish need oxygen to survive. Because they live in water, they have Gill structure Each gill is supported by a gill arch – a bony structure that is oriented vertically on the side of a fish, just behind its head. The gill arch provides the support to hold a number of comb-like structures called gill filaments. Gill filaments extend out horizontally from the gill arches. Each gill filament produces many branches called primary lamellae and the primary lamellae branch out into tiny secondary lamellae. The secondary lamellae run parallel to the flow of the water and absorb oxygen from the water into the fish’s body. The number of secondary lamellae can vary immensely between fish species but they are always extremely abundant. For example, a large, active tuna can have more than 5 million secondary lamellae per cm 2. How do gills work? As water passes over or is pumped over the gills, oxygen is absorbed by through the walls of the secondary lamellae and CO 2 is released. The secondary lamellae contain blood with low levels of oxygen. As water flows over the lamellae oxygen is asborbed into the blood and then the blood pumped around the body by the fish’s heart. The large surface area of the secondary lamellae is also helpful for exchanging body heat, ions and water between the fish’s body and the surrounding water. Having so many tiny secondary lamellae creates an enormous surface area for oxygen to be a...

Gillnetting

Gillnetting is a fishing method that uses gillnets: vertical panels of netting that hang from a line with regularly spaced floaters that hold the line on the surface of the water. The floats are sometimes called "corks" and the line with corks is generally referred to as a "cork line." The line along the bottom of the panels is generally weighted. Traditionally this line has been weighted with lead and may be referred to as "lead line." A gillnet is normally set in a straight line. Gillnets can be characterized by mesh size, as well as colour and type of filament from which they are made. Fish may be caught by gillnets in three ways: • Wedged– held by the mesh around the body. • Gilled– held by mesh slipping behind the • Tangled– held by teeth, spines, Most often fish are gilled. A fish swims into a net and passes only part way through the mesh. When it struggles to free itself, the twine slips behind the gill cover and prevents escape. Gillnets are so effective that their use is closely monitored and regulated by fisheries management and Gillnets existed in ancient times, as archaeological evidence from the Middle East demonstrates. Both drift gillnets and setnets have long been used by cultures around the world. There is evidence of fisheries exploitation, including gillnetting, going far back in Japanese history, with many specific details available from the Gillnetting was an early fishing technology in colonial America, [ vague] used for example, in fisheries for Atla...
