Goodnight Mommy movie review & film summary (2015)

Ever since it debuted at last year's Venice Film Festival, the Austrian import "Goodnight Mommy" has been building up a reputation as a horror exercise of the highest order—the kind of film that could supposedly reduce even the hardiest of observers into quivering blobs of jelly squirming in their seats, partly out of what is happening on the screen and partly out of fear of what might be coming just around the corner. As someone who has seen more than his fair share of such films that have failed to live up to their hype over the years, I tend to approach such things with more than a healthy dose of skepticism. In this particular case, the movie in question has more than lived up to its advanced word. In fact, co-filmmakers Veronika Franz and As the film opens, 10-year-old twin brothers Lukas and Elias (played by real-life twins Lukas and Despite her wishes, the brothers are inseparable as they go about spending their time together doing things that range from the perfectly normal (jumping on a trampoline in the rain) to the odd (exploring a nearby tomb) to the downright icky (collecting giant beetles in a fish tank). As time passes and their still-bandaged mother continues to act stranger and crueler, the boys become increasingly convinced that they are dealing with someone who is pretending to be her. Since they have no one else to turn to (their father is briefly referenced once but there isn't even a picture of him in the house and the local priest that they flee to m...

Good Night, Oscar starring Sean Hayes Broadway review

In Good Night, Oscar, opening April 24 at the Belasco Theater in New York City, Hayes finally has that material — and he's bringing it to Broadway after the show premiered in Chicago last year. Written by Pulitzer- and Tony-winner Doug Wright ( I Am My Own Wife, Grey Gardens), Good Night, Oscar is a play ostensibly about pianist, composer, and noted wit Oscar Levant — through whom the show offers commentaries on the nature and burden of genius, exploitation of mental illness, and the polarizing roles of comedy and the media in our society. Levant was born in 1906 and rose to prominence in New York as a gifted pianist before heading out to Hollywood where he befriended George Gershwin and started composing music for film. He eventually found his way in front of the camera, appearing most famously as Gene Kelly's best friend in the Best Picture winner of 1951, An American in Paris, performing Gershwin's "Concerto in F." Levant also became well-known for his quick wit and devastating one-liners as a guest on game shows and talk shows. A hopeless neurotic, Levant developed an addiction to prescription drugs and spent much of his later years in and out of mental hospitals, committed by his wife June. He died of a heart attack in 1972 at age 65, discovered by June after she went to retrieve him for an interview with then-photojournalist — and future Murphy Brown star — Emily Bergl plays Levant's long-suffering — but also complicit — wife June; Marchánt Davis is Alvin Finney, the...

Good Night Movie Review: Manikandan’s terrific performance will surely not let you 'snore'

By Janani K: Simple stories with real-life problems are hard to come by. These days, films require larger-than-life treatment. But, when movies like Thiruchitrambalam and DaDa work, it brings a smile to your face. These films remind your struggles in life and prove that your problems are not far-fetched. Manikandan’s Good Night is a nice little addition to the said list of films. Mohan (Manikandan) is an IT employee, who has severe snoring issues. His family comprises his mom, sister Maha (Raichal Rebecca), brother-in-law Ramesh (Ramesh Thilak), and his younger sister and mother. Meanwhile, there’s Anu (Meetha Raghunath) who is depressed in life as she considers herself unlucky. Her house owners are a cute couple (Thatha and Paati), who wants good things to happen for Anu. When depressed Mohan meets Anu, his life lights up. However, there is a problem. A huge problem. What happens when his snoring issues affect his marital life and eventually the relationships in his life? Good Night starts off with the snoring of Mohan. As you watch the film, you get so used to the sound, that every time, you hear it, you start laughing. Mohan has already lost a girl he was attracted to because of his snoring. He is cautious, but this is a problem beyond his control. He has faced humiliation and been shamed for it throughout his life. However, all these issues are dealt with by well-written comedy sequences, which will leave you in splits. Be it Mohan’s antics or his caring nature or his ...

1,000 Times Good Night movie review (2014)

The first English-language film from Norwegian director Eric Poppe is a conscientious and beautifully shot movie that ultimately bogs down in its own disinclination to come to any kind of dramatically useful conclusion about its subject. Said subject is Rebecca. Rebecca is accomplished, brilliant, and beautiful. Just the fact that she’s played by “ You said you loved me because I had passion, I had fire…” Rebecca protests to her husband after he intimates that this time, enough’s enough. It’s pretty clear right off the bat that Rebecca’s addicted to the danger of being a war photographer; there are several senses in which this movie feels like When Daddy sleeps on the sofa it’s never a good time…,” my eyerolls might have become audible. The movie does pick up here and there, especially when Binoche’s character gets a chance to explain why she does what she does. When she lays out for her daughter the greed for diamonds and precious metals that sets off civil wars in Africa, the character’s anger and commitment come to vivid life. The movie doesn’t sufficiently connect those commendable qualities to Rebecca’s recklessness, which is vividly conveyed in a scene set in an ostensibly “conflict-free” site in Kenya that Rebecca visits with her daughter. When an armed group usurps that site, Rebecca ostentatiously puts herself in harm’s way after dispatching her own child with maniacal haste. Engaging but ultimately frustrating scenes are one thing. Elsewhere, the movie keeps brin...
