Harnaaz Sandhu, 21, was crowned Andrea Meza, was on-hand to crown her successor at the event, which was hosted by Steve Harvey. The first runner-up was Nadia Ferreira, from Paraguay, with South Africa’s Lalela Mswane being named third runner-up. However, in the end, it was Harnaaz who accepted the crown, looking stunning in a sparkling silver dress as she did so. And now, Harnaaz will hand over the Miss Universe crown to the newest winner on Jan. 14, 2023. Harnaaz’s win was the third time that a contestant from India had been named Miss Universe. In 2000, the winner was India’s Lara Dutta, and before that, in 1994, Sushmita Sen won the honor. Only the United States, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines have crowned more winners over the years. Outgoing Miss Universe 2021, Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu was seemingly emotional as she took her final walk before crowning USA's R'Bonney Gabriel as the new Miss Universe. Ms Sandhu tried hard to hold back her tears as she walked the stage one last time as the reigning Miss Universe. The diva who wore a stunning black gown was welcomed on the grand stage as the pageant competitors clapped enthusiastically for her. The special gown that she wore also featured Sushmita Sen's 1994 pageant-winning moment digitally printed on the back. As she waved to the audience, folded her hands in Namaste, and blew kisses in the air, tears rolled down her cheeks. During her walk, Ms Sandhu also appeared to stumble, however, she regained her balance in no time. A video of the emotional moment has been posted on Twitter by the official account of Miss Universe. Who is Harnaaz Sandhu? Harnaaz is a model hailing from Chandigarh, where she finished her schooling and college. The Miss Universe winner has been in the fashion industry for quite some years now and has even starred in films like Yaara Diyan Poo Baran and Bai Ji Kuttange. She is a strong advocate for women's rights and draws her inspiration from Harnaaz's win is a historic one as she brings home the title 21 years after Lara Dutta Bhupathi won it in the year 2000. She is the third Indian woman to be crowned Miss Universe. Harnaaz began competing in pageantry as a teenager, winning titles such as Miss Chandigarh 2017 and Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018. After winning the title of Femina Miss India Punjab 2019, Sandhu competed in Femina Miss India. The Miss Universe 2021 is also a nature-lover.
