The best horror movies of 2022

> > Whether you're into extraterrestrial creature features, sharp social commentary slashers, or cannibal love stories, 2022 was a colossal year for horror. The best horror movies of 2022 scared the crap out of us, but not all in the same way. Alien invasion films dominated this year, from Predator Bodies Bodies Bodies Bones and All . If you're looking to cut right to the top horror hits of the year, rest assured: There's something weird and terrifying in here for you. Credit: Stellar Citizens With Prey and Nope, it sure has been a monumental year for alien invasion films, but Slash/Back was an underrated highlight. The first ever feature filmed in the hamlet of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, it's set in the Inuit village of Canada's Baffin Island. Slash/Back is a creative, cheeky, and teen-led take on the genre from co-writer/director Nyla Innuksuk. Flanked with an excellent score by Michael Brook and The Halluci Nation, Slash/Back hinges on a group of teenage girls — Maika (Tasiana Shirley), Jesse (Alexis Wolfe), Uki (Nalajoss Ellsworth), Leena (Chelsea Prusky), and Aju (Frankie Vincent-Wolfe) — who are the village's best chance at eradicating the alien forms going about their body-snatching business. Seriously, the skin suits in this film are nightmare fuel. But beyond the scares, gore, and odes to John Carpenter's The Thing, Innuksuk lets our kickass protagonists be truly what they are: teens. There's always time to talk about crushes, even between tentacle-clad alien hunts. As...

Best Horror Movies of 2022

Horror cinema is thriving. It feels important to note that after a year like 2022. While the past 12 months saw industry trades choked with grim or despairing reports on the box office of original movies and new ideas, the news surrounding chillers has been strangely sunny and full of cheer. From the year beginning with a robust relaunch of the Scream franchise to its ending, where the horror-comedy-satire amalgamation of The Menu won audiences over twice, once in theaters and again on streaming, we’ve seen repeated testimonials to the fact audiences like being scared—and they don’t necessarily care if the movie has a colon, numeral, or hyphen in the title. Along the way, we’ve seen some genuinely nervy and daring attempts to push the boundaries of cinematic dread, be it in the art house, a la Speak No Evil , or the multiplex, courtesy of Smile. We’ve also been thrilled by high-concept shocks like the twisty Barbarian. Which is all to say that it has been a superb year for horror movies. Below are the ones we suspect are the best. Barbarian What better place to begin this list than with what many of us consider to be the most ferocious surprise of the year—it’s certainly one of the most entertaining. Barbarian was originally marketed around a quirk of modern living (AirBnBs and other forms of home-sharing). Our newfound “sharing economy” turns into nightmare scenario though when a young woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell) arrives in the dead of night to a house she’s rent...

They See You (Review)

Filmmaker Tory Jones and his Jonestown Films label has released some seriously entertaining slashers over the last few years with The Wicked One, the follow up Wicked Ones, and Angel. He’s a talented filmmaker and his films are worth your time. Sometime ago he announced his Halloween centered horror film They See You. The original poster for the film really pulled me in but the film lost steam fairly early as Jones moved on to other films after it’s initial announcement. However, after Jones completed his current project he brought They See You back from the dead. During the crowd funding campaign I pre-ordered the blu and it arrived a few days back. I couldn’t wait to dig into it so as soon as I had the time I quickly tossed it in and hit play. **Spoiler Alert** The film follows the three Sanders brothers as Halloween approaches. They are social outcasts and often catch hell from the town’s popular teens. With Halloween just around the corner they decide to steal an antique sign from an antique shop with the help of their bully’s girlfriend. They are able to get it and soon learn that the board is a key that opens the door that frees a group of supernatural beings that want nothing more than to kill everyone. **Spoiler Alert** Honestly, They See You was not what I was expecting but it’s not a bad film. I was hoping that Jonestown Films was taking the knowledge they had gained from the string of slashers they had made to make a new Halloween-centric slasher for genre fans....

Best Horror Movies Of 2022

Pearl How many directors can brag about having two separate films in massive consideration for “Best of the Year” horror roundups? X is the winner in my opinion (spoiler alert), but Mia Goth makes Pearl unmissable. With Wizard of Oz whimsy at the core of an unstable hopeful actor’s breakdown, I described Pearl elsewhere as “an ax-swinging slice of bad-vibes hoedown kookiness.” Goth takes to her almost famous farmgirl character with unmeasurable psychosis — charming, ruthless, delightful and deranged. Pearl is Goth’s technicolor showcase and she doesn’t waste any potential in a screenplay she co-wrote with Ti West during the 14-day quarantine before shooting on X could begin (which IGN’s reviewer thought a better idea than actual production). The Sadness "The Sadness is one of the ickiest, most sadistic outbursts of unbridled horror aggression I've beheld in a spell," I wrote elsewhere in a review for Shudder's most delinquent release of the year. It's a blend of 28 Days Later and The Purge, as infected Chinese citizens start savagely attacking everyone everywhere all at once. Even worse, these feral monstrosities act on heightened immorality levels, explicitly sexual and violent. Intensity and sadism mock civil obedience as bodies are flayed, deep-fried, and defiled (here’s your trigger warning). There are acts in The Sadness that will cause even more veteran gorehounds to cringe in what's easily the meanest horror flick of 2022. Offseason Mickey Keating's Offseason — avai...
