India State of Forest Report 2021: Key takeaways

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEF&CC) released the biennial India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021 on January 13, 2021. “The total forest and tree cover of the country is 80.9 million hectares, which is 24.62% of the geographical area of the country,” said Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for MoEF&CC sharing the report findings. India has a robust scientific system for biennial assessment of forest cover, and inventory of forests as well as trees outside forests by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), an organisation under the MOEF&CC. The ISFR 2021 is the seventeenth report in the series and looks at the growing stock in forests and trees outside forests, bamboo resources, carbon stock and several other parameters. It assesses the state-wise increase or loss of forest covers, mangrove ecosystem, carbon stock, climate change hotspots, forest cover in tiger reserve areas, above ground estimates of biomass using SAR data and forest fire monitoring. It provides valuable inputs for planning, policy formulation and evidence-based decision making both at the national and state levels. “We are entering the second phase of the national mission for Green India, and the MOEF&CC has taken several decisions for improving forest conservation through peoples’ participation. To achieve India’s aim of increasing the additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes CO2 equivalent by 2030, the Nagar Van Yojana has been introduced. This will help increase the tree c...

Kochi : The country’s forest and tree cover is spread across 8.09 lakh sq. km – an increase of 2,261 sq. km since 2019 – according to the latest edition of India’s ‘State of Forest Report’, for the year 2021. Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav released the report, prepared every two years by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), in New Delhi on January 13. On the flip side, the report has recorded a decline in forest cover in the country’s hill and tribal districts as well as across the northeastern states. “India has very unique forests,” Yadav said during the release function. “People and nature are not separate here, but part of each other. Our native wisdom links us to nature. He added that the report can tell us “how we can not only conserve our forests but also make them prosper.” Increase in forest and tree cover According to the FSI, which comes under the Union environment ministry, the total forest and tree cover of India is currently 8,09,537 sq. km – spanning 24.62% of India’s total geographical area. This includes both forest cover – i.e. all land with a tree canopy density, or fraction of area covered by the crowns of trees, of more than 10% and area of more than one hectare – and tree cover, that is trees outside forests occupying in less than one hectare, across the country. That is, according to the 2021 report, India’s fo...

• The total forest and tree cover is spread across 802,088 square km, which is 24.39 percent of the geographical area of the country. • However, in the northeast region (NER), the current assessment shows an actual decrease of forest cover to the extent of 630 square km. • Independent experts say that the report “masks ground realities” of forest status by in-cluding commercial plantations etc. under its ambit. India has recorded a one percent jump (8,021 square km) in overall forest and tree cover between 2015 and 2017 despite population and livestock pressures, even as the green footprint in the northeast region shrunk by 630 square km, according to the latest Based on satellite data analysis, the biennial assessment – conducted by the The total forest cover is 708,273 square km, which is 21.54 percent of the total area of the country.
