Indore tragedy: Were authorities unaware that temple existed over a closed stepwell?

Municipal authorities in Indore claim to have no idea that the ancient stepwell, which collapsed leading to the death of 36 devotees in Patel Nagar, was closed with a flimsy concrete cover and converted into a temple by Shri Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Mandir Trust. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava told THE WEEK that the IMC (Indore municipal corporation) was not aware that a stepwell had been covered and converted into a temple. “The stepwell in question was covered about four decades ago. We conducted a survey of the water bodies in Indore two years ago, but this stepwell was not recorded, as it was covered. Who did all these constructions 40 years ago and under what circumstances, remain to be seen,” the mayor said. The mayor said the IMC had given notice to the temple trust on a new illegal temple construction being done on adjacent land (earmarked for a community garden) twice – in April 2022 and in January 2023. However, the officials did not pay attention to the existing flimsy temple/stepwell structure, also allegedly illegal, which collapsed, resulting in the death of 36 people on the day of Ramnavami. This is despite the fact that in the written reply to a notice served by IMC in April 2022, the temple trust, while denying any illegal construction and accusing the authorities of trying to hurt the religious sentiments of the devotees, had twice mentioned the covered stepwell and the plan to restore it. The reply also mentioned that the IMC authorities have reques...

Indore Temple, Beleshwar Mahadev Temple: Death Count In Indore Temple Tragedy Rises To 35, 14 Rescued6

Indore: As many as 36 people have been killed after the roof of a stepwell collapsed at a temple in Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Thursday. The stepwell roof at the Beleshwar Mahadev temple could not sustain the weight of a large crowd on Ram Navami. "Two people returned home safely after getting treatment. The search operation to trace persons reported missing is underway," Indore Collector Ilayaraja T said, as quoted by news agency ANI. "The 18 hours long rescue operation started at around 12:30 on Thursday, and is still ongoing," he added. Managed by a private trust, the temple is located at Sneh Nagar, one of the oldest residential colonies in Indore. Sources have said the tragedy could have been averted had the Indore Municipal Corporation acted on the complaints filed by residents. NDTV accessed a copy of a municipality notice to the Beleshwar Mahadev temple's trust in April 2022 over complaints by locals who allege that the temple was built on a stepwell in an encroached park. The municipal body had marked the well's cover for demolition but backed down after being warned by the trust that such a move will hurt religious sentiments. On Ram Navami, a havan was being performed on the concrete slab covering a stepwell which also served as the platform of the temple. The concrete slab was not strong enough to hold the weight of 30-40 people, resulting in devotees plunging into the 40-foot-deep stepwell. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fo...
