iPad mini 7 — everything we know so far

Equally, Apple has been somewhat sporadic with its iPad mini update and release cadence. So it wouldn't be beyond the realms of imagination for the iPad mini 7 to be revealed and then released earlier in 2024, say around the springtime. In terms of price, we’d expect the iPad mini 7 to stick with the same price range as its predecessor. That means a starting price of $499 / £479 / AU$749 for the base model. Our hope is Apple ditches the 64GB base model and starts storage at a more reasonable 128GB for 2023 128GB, without jacking up the price. iPad mini design and display (Image credit: Henry T. Casey) We’ve seen no rumors that suggest the next iPad mini will have a major redesign. While there’s a chance we might see some tweaks, such as narrower bezels around the display, that’s currently wishful thinking on our part. "[Apple] isn’t likely to do another major overhaul of the product, so I’d expect the next model to offer little more than a processor upgrade,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has claimed. We could see some new colors, but so far we’d simply expect to see a repeat of the Space Gray, Purple, Starlight, and Pink hues seen with the iPad mini 6. One change that could be handy would be the addition of a Smart Connector. This would add magnetic pins on the side of the iPad mini 7 to enable it to connect to devices like a keyboard. While using an iPad mini as a pseudo laptop might sound bizarre, these connectors could be used to act as a form of charging stand for the next ...

Night Shift brings intelligent color temperature-shifting tech to the iPad Mini 2. Whether you're tablet surfing in the morning or nighttime, this new feature automatically shifts the light emitted from the display to a hue of yellow that's much easier on the eyes. While it might not sound like a big deal, it's hard to go back to a life without Night Shift. The change in the screen's color temperature is said to assist in keeping your circadian rhythm in balance. Meaning, unlike other screens, the iPad Mini 2 with Night Shift won't mess with your sleep schedule. Curious to see what sorts of new features are coming down the line with the iOS 10 upgrade? We've done the legwork and have served up Original review follows below... The iPad mini 2 was, in 2013, Apple's next step in the smaller tablet wars – and with Google and Amazon stepping up their respective games, the Cupertino brand needed something that hit back with strength. However, even with that landscape, I was still surprised when Apple announced the iPad mini 2 on stage, coming with things like the A7 chip under the hood and a 128GB iteration to satisfy those that crave a lot of HD action (although you're now stuck with 32GB maximum). On top of that, there's the much-needed Retina screen (as the name might have told you) and an improvement in battery size over the first iPad mini to help power those pixels more effectively. However, there's the big issue of price, which Apple has had to balance carefully over rece...

Given that the iPad Air 2 runs the latest version of iPadOS well, it looks like the kids will still have a couple of years life out of these great machines.

A history of the iPad Mini, from life to limbo

After introduction in 2012 and yearly updates for the next three years, Apple's iPad Mini line hasn't been updated since the release of the iPad Mini 4 in the fall of 2015. The lack of noise about a new version would seem to indicate that, even if it hasn't been formally killed off, the product has at least fallen out of favor within Apple. It's certainly understandable for Apple to move away from the iPad Mini category, as the whole product line, and the size of its offerings, has certainly evolved in the six years since the Mini was first unveiled. But for a time, a product of that size, and at that price point, certainly had a place. AppleInsider wrote that "the iPad mini is not a cheap, low end tablet trying to establish the first rung of a new platform by stretching some existing smartphone apps across a larger screen." We rated it 4.5 out 5, praising "thin sturdy construction," compact size, easy setup and use, and "very good camera," while criticizing the lack of a full Retina Display. The big change was that the new Mini added a Retina Display, which its predecessor had lacked, bringing the display up to 2048x1536 pixels at 326 ppi. There was also a higher price point, as the second iPad Mini started at $399, compared to $329 for the first. The new version also offered a 128GB size, while the original maxed out at 64GB. "While Apple got almost everything right with the Retina iPad mini, there is a catch. The cost for every model has increased by $70 from last year'...
