iPhone 14 Plus review: Bigger is better

That larger screen is an OLED display with HDR capabilities, a 2 million to one contrast ratio, 800 nits of brightness, and 1,200 nits of peak brightness under HDR content. Other features like Wide color (P3) support, Haptic Touch, and True Tone make an appearance, but not the always-on screen or Dynamic Island of the Pro models. In Geekbench 5, the iPhone 14 scored a 1,733 and a 4,641 on the single and multi-core tests respectively, and the iPhone 14 Plus was within single-digits of these tests. These are still near identical scores to the iPhone 13 which scored 1,742 and 4,768. While the iPhone 13 scored a bit better on the multi-core, this is all within the margin of error and those CPUs are basically the same. Only Apple knows specifically why it effectively used the 2021 flagship processor again in the 2022 lineup. If we had to guess, a year ago when final design decisions were made on the iPhone 14 line, Apple looked at the competition, considered its rivals as being more than a year behind in processing power, and decided to differentiate the line more. What has changed are things like the Main camera's aperture widening and the use of a larger sensor with bigger 1.9-micron pixels, which provide 49% better low-light performance than the iPhone 13. Night Mode theoretically kicks in less frequently than before, while Portrait mode shots will gain a brighter exposure. The other safety feature, Crash Detection, is also self-explanatory. Using onboard sensors, including ...

iPhone 14 Plus review: It's bigger and better

The iPhone 14 Plus is a great option for those after a bigger handset, with a design, display, cameras and build quality that are all excellent, if a bit last-generation. It's also a more affordable way to get into Apple’s big-screen smartphone world, without having to shell out $1,000 / £1,000-plus. The 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus is a newcomer to the iPhone lineup, supplanting the adorably small Coming with most of the same limitations as its non-Pro sibling, the iPhone 14 Plus might seem like just another good-enough handset; but don’t underestimate the benefits of a big screen and excellent battery life. These things matter, and getting them for $899 / £949 / AU$1,579 (for the base 128GB phone), as opposed to the $1,099 / £1,199 / AU$1,899 you’d pay for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, means this is a smartphone worth considering. The iPhone 14 Plus looks just like the iPhone 14, but it's bigger (Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff) Even though we don't get a telephoto lens or a 48MP primary sensor on the iPhone 14 Plus, the two 12MP cameras on the back (the main and ultra-wide) are a step up from the iPhone 13’s array. Part of this is due to better sensors and lenses, but there’s also the new Photonic Engine, which applies Apple’s Deep Fusion image technology to uncompressed images. Even the front 12MP camera gets an upgrade, with a better sensor and autofocus. These are characteristically above-average cameras that we think will satisfy most casual photographers and videographers...

iPhone 14 Review: A Good Upgrade for Most People

Like • Main camera upgrade is great • Autofocus makes selfies look better • Improved repairability is welcomed • Action mode is smooth Don't like • Ultrawide photos are a step down in image quality • Year-over-year upgrades are minimal • Videos recorded in low light look just OK The iPhone 14 is both an improvement on last year's iPhone 13 and one of the most minimal year-over-year upgrades in Apple's history. On the outside, the 14 inherits the iPhone 13's tried and true flat-sided aluminum design. On the inside, Apple essentially repackaged the iPhone 13 Pro, sans the telephoto camera and high-refresh-rate screen. The result is lovely and the iPhone 14 is a good upgrade for most people. The iPhone 14 starts at $799 (including a $30 connectivity discount if you activate it with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon), the same price as the iPhone 12 and 13 when they first went on sale. If you're hoping for more significant improvements, there's the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, both of which are brimming with updates. Should you buy the iPhone 14 Plus? Here's the pros and cons

(Image credit: Tom's Guide) It might not seem like a big difference, but the iPhone 14 Plus' 6.7-inch screen is significantly larger than the regular iPhone 14's 6.1-inch panel. The Plus' display delivers more of everything, whether you're looking for a more immersive viewing experience, a bigger viewfinder for taking photos or you want to see more text on screen at once. (Image credit: Tom's Guide) The iPhone 14 Plus has room for a larger battery than the iPhone 14, and it shows. On the Tom's Guide Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness, the iPhone 14 Plus lasted an excellent 11 hours and 57 minutes. That's enough to make our best phone battery life list. By comparison, the iPhone 14 lasted 9:28. So we're talking about a nearly 2.5 hours extra juice from the iPhone 14 Plus. Great cameras The iPhone 14 Plus offers a lot of great camera upgrades, including a brighter and bigger main sensor and Photonic Engine for better looking images in low light. Check out the above comparison with the Galaxy S22. The new iPhone delivers better detail in the petals of this impatiens flower, especially when you look at the water droplets. Other camera highlights include a 12MP ultrawide camera that captures 4x more of the scene and a faster f/1.9 aperture on the front 12MP camera with autofocus. Action mode video At first I thought Action Mode on the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 was a gimmick. Then I tried it. Apple uses the ultra-wide ...
