The tradition of automatons in watchmaking is long and varied, normally with a very traditional focus. Jacob & Co. excels in traditional watchmaking with a modern twist, which perfectly describes the Oil Pump. It's a traditional automaton with a contemporary subject - the oil industry. "I have many, many friends in the oil business, who came to me to develop something special for them," remembers Jacob Arabo. "I saw what was on the market and I knew they wanted something more interesting and cooler. I had been talking with my engineers for three years to design this. What we have come up with is the real thing, it takes you straight to the oil fields." The two derricks move on demand, and there is even an "oil reserve" on the dial of the watch. The pusher at two o'clock starts the two derricks moving, pumping up and down. Rather than stuffy jaquemarts or something classic, the Oil Pump modernizes the automaton with two oil derricks that move in unison. Depressing the pusher charges the power reserve for the automaton and sets them into action. The dial is a grill evocative of oil rigs, offering a glimpse of the high-watchmaking movement underneath. A system of 18K rose gold pipes and wheels connects the various elements above the grill, including an "oil pressure gauge" power reserve and an 18K rose gold oil reservoir, completing the wildcatting theme. It started with an idea conceived by Jacob & Co. together with Bugatti - how to reproduce the visceral sensation of the iconic Bugatti 16-cylinder engine in a timepiece. After almost a full year of development, the answer is here in the form of the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon. Everything is designed to honor the Chiron in a timepiece. The case is inspired by the flowing lines of the Chiron and the movement, or "engine block," intended to duplicate the Bugatti engine, is placed under a massive sapphire crystal, on display for all In 2019, Bugatti and Jacob & Co. signed a multi-year partnership to create unique, never-before-seen timepieces. These watches are true to the spirit of both companies, while taking watchmaking to impossible heights. To inaugurate this partnership led by performance, two timepieces were created. These watches, based on the Twin Turbo Furious and the Epic X Chrono, were directly inspired by the unique design and spirit of Bugatti hypercars.
