At a distance of 1 km from Mehrangarh Fort and 5 km from Jodhpur Junction, Jaswant Thada is a royal cenotaph located near Mehrangarh Fort entrance in Jodhpur city of Rajasthan state. It is famed as one of the most beautiful white marble cenotaphs in Rajasthan and also one of the popular Jodhpur tourist places. Jaswant Thada was built by Sardar Singh of Jodhpur in 1899 CE in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. This cenotaph is an example of architectural brilliance in India. Famed as the Taj Mahal of Marwar, Jaswant Thada is a perfect example of Rajputana style of architecture. It is a white marble memorial, built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. These sheets are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a warm glow when illuminated by the sun. The main memorial has been built like a temple with intricately marble stone carvings, and impressive sculptures, frescos, domes and pillars. The cenotaph has two more tombs within it. The cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh displays portraits of the rulers and Maharajas of Jodhpur. Carved gazebos, a beautiful multi-tiered garden, and a small lake are also located within this cenotaph complex. Royal crematorium and three other cenotaphs are also located at this site. This cenotaph was built in the 19th century by Maharaja Sardar Singh in the memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur. One should visit this memorial, which has a temple like architecture, on their tour to Jodhpur. Jaswant Thada is a perfect example of architectural brilliance. Jaswant Thada in Jodhpur is a magnificent white edifice, half-covered by greenery. It is a stunning marble memorial. It is located on the major road from Jodhpur to Meherangarh Fort. The Jaswant Thada balances off the Meherangarh fort’s sturdy commanding appearance with some of Rajasthan’s most delicate and exquisite marble sculptures. Many visitors stroll through the Jaswant Thada memorial after touring the Sardar Singh built the Jaswant Thada in 1899 to memorialize his father, Jaswant Singh II, who died in 1895. The site has since become a burial ground and memorial for the maharajas of Jodhpur, each of whom has a white marble tomb in the central tower. One of the complex’s unusual memorials is devoted to a peacock that flew into the funeral pyre as the maharaja’s body was burnt. Jalis are ornate marble lattice screens that hang over the windows.
