Jindal Steel and Power to set up largest, greenest steel plant in Odisha

After bagging Utkal B1 and B2 coal block in the Angul-Talcher belt in the state, Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) on Friday said it would develop its Odisha plant into the largest and greenest facility in the world. This was stated by the company's chairman Naveen Jindal. He said JSPL has secured sufficient reserves of coal to enable the mega steel company to enhance its capacity for green steel making. He claimed that JSPL is the first steelmaker in the world to build Coal Gasification to produce steel using clean coal technologies. Greeting the people of Odisha on the occasion of Utkal Divas, Jindal said, "We won the Utkal B1 & B2 Coal Block on 17th Punya Tithi of Shri OP Jindal Ji who had a vision of using indigenous coal to make steel. This will help us to translate the shared dream of Bauji and legendary leader Biju Patnaik ji to a reality and bring prosperity to Odisha through value addition of natural resources and industrialisation". JSPL has setup an integrated steel and power plant at Angul, Odisha on approximately 4,000 acres of land, and to cater for the housing demand of their staff, guests, trainees, students, and workers around 300 acres of land is earmarked. The layout of residential area includes low and high-rise towers, villas with amenities including parks, play areas, schools, hospitals, shopping centres, clubs, and sports facilities. This project includes type F residential towers for staff and is to be built on 10.05 acres of land. It comprises of 9 blocks of G+11 floor having 8 nos 2BHK units per floor. The total built-up area per block is 1, 05,260 sqft and of the entire project is 8, 52,080 sqft. Design Intent The residential towers are envisaged to be built using structural steel sections for gravity and lateral force resisting superstructure system. The sub structure up to plinth shall be built in reinforced concrete. The superstructure consists of Steel column-beam frame and has been analyzed as rigid jointed multi story non-sway frames in accordance with stringent Indian standard (IS Codes) provisions and detailed intricately to take residential occupancy into account. Cross bracings have been provided at locations not to hinder with the aesthetics and functionality of the building and to resist the lateral loads due to wind and earthquake. Jindal asserts commitment to plant expansion

After his meeting with Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra and Steel and Mines Secretary Deoranjan Singh here, Jindal thanked the State government for approving JSPL’s expansion proposal. The high-level clearance authority (HLCA) of the State headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had approved the JSPL’s proposed expansion of Angul steel plant in July. In November last year, the HLCA had approved its expansion plan to 18.6 MTPA with an investment of Rs 76,000 crore. The company had proposed additional investment of Rs 24,652 crore to increase the capacity of the plant to 25.2 MTPA. Stating that the Angul plant will be the largest steel making facility in the world, the JSPL chief expressed confidence that the government will ensure raw material supply to steel plants of the State for value addition under the existing pre-emption policy. Responding to queries, JSPL Managing Director VR Sharma said, “The company will participate in the forthcoming auction of iron ore mines in Odisha. Irrespective of the auction’s outcome, we are confident that the State government would make all out efforts to ensure raw material security for industrial units in Odisha and promote value addition of raw material within the State under its pre-emption scheme.” While as many as 11 mines including seven iron ore blocks are scheduled for auction, two iron ore and manganese blocks are up for e-auction, August 24 being the last date for submission of bids.
