Ice Cream With Wafer Biscuits? Look No Further

K. Rustom & Co. (popularly known as just K. Rustoms) is an Irani ice cream parlour which has been churning out the yummiest ice cream biscuits since 1953! They serve their ice cream as a thick slab sandwiched between wafer biscuits and wrapped in butter paper. They have a vast variety of flavours, my personal favorites being Rum & Raisins and Paan. This place is a must visit if you're anywhere around Churchgate!

Mumbai’s iconic K Rustom has been asked to vacate its premise!

K Rustom has recently lost a case against its landlord ‘the Cricket Club of India’ (CCI), in the Court of Small Causes and has been asked to vacate its premise which is a part of the Brabourne Stadium in the North Stand Building. Be it summer, winter, or monsoon, one thing that remains constant is the taste of K Rustom’s ice creams. This 80-year-old ice cream parlour is a go-to place for many Mumbaikars and is known for its taste, quality, and legacy. It was Khodabux Rustom who got the place in 1937 and turned it into the ice cream parlour in 1953 and since then it has been loved for its yummiest and freshest ice cream biscuits. The establishment is originally is property of the Cricket Club of India (CCI). And in the year 1996, they even filed a suit against K Rustom. This legal fight has been going on for 22 years. But last week, K Rustomlost the case against CCI and has been asked to vacate its premise. Requirement of the club At the small causes court, CCI had submitted that they were landlords of the mentioned property under the Bombay Rent Act.They also submitted that the club needs the premise for its activities as the number of members has gone up greatly. “We do not comment on individual cases. But this matter seems to be in the public domain. So we can confirm that the verdict is in our favour. We want and need additional space for the expansion of different facilities for our members. There is an exponential growth in our members which today stands at approximat...

K Rustom’s: Churning up memories since 1953

K Rustom’s ice cream parlour near Churchgate was started by Khodabux Rustom Irani. Nirmal Harindran Sandwiched between two wafers, the slices of ice cream in unique flavours have been drawing crowds to K Rustom’s ice creams since 1953. For the scores of tourists visiting Marine Drive every day, the seaside experience is complete only after stopping for an ice cream at K Rustom’s. Started by Khodabux Rustom Irani, the shop at Veer Nariman Road, just a kilometre away from Marine Drive, was not always an ice cream shop. “It used to be a department store, where we would sell cotton, wool, medicines, among other things. But in 1953, we started selling ice-creams. The sea was close and it attracted a lot of people. So, we had an idea: let’s sell ice cream,” said Rodha Irani, Khodabux Rustom’s elder daughter. From classics such as vanilla and chocolate to populars such as walnut crunch, pineapple, raspberry, papaya and nescafe, their signature ice cream sandwiches are available in all flavours. “Initially, ice-creams were served on pretty porcelain plates, but several customers started taking away the plates or breaking them. Hence, we came up with wafers,” said Irani. New flavours such as coco mint crunch, toffee crunch, rum and raisin have also been added to their menu. Unlike the colourful display one finds at gelato parlours, ice-creams at K Rustom’s stay put in large steel freezers and emerge only when ordered. The shop, however, remains impervious to new entrants, taking pr...
