'Kaduva' will be a refreshing change for Malayalam cinema: Prithviraj

By IANS CHENNAI: Stating that he was immensely proud of the content being generated by Malayalam cinema, actor Prithviraj on Monday said that the only genre that the industry had slightly forgotten was the mass action entertainer genre and that his upcoming film 'Kaduva' was a step in that direction. Speaking at the launch of the film's teaser in Chennai, which was attended by the entire cast of 'Kaduva' and a host of celebrities including Tamil actors Arya and Jiiva, Prithviraj said, "We have to have all kinds of films. Right now, the Malayalam industry is making superb films. We are going through a phase where we are making superb content but we've missed out one genre. I, as a film lover, miss the mass masala commercial entertainers in Malayalam. So, when they narrated this script to me in 2017, I felt it had been a long time since such films had come out in Malayalam. ALSO READ| "Let me make it clear, the multi-city promotions that we have embarked on is not only for 'Kaduva'. This is the first step of a big process. I am someone who wishes that from now on, all big Malayalam films that are to be released are released in this fashion. We have to come and communicate with our audience in every state on a first person basis. I hope and pray that we will be able to sustain this process for all big releases coming from Kerala." The title of the film, which features Prithviraj and Samyuktha Menon in the lead and Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi playing a pivotal role, means Tig...

Kaduva Movie Review: A thriller without spark

Story: Set in the 90s, Pala planter Kaduvakunnel Kuriyachan goes on a coalition course with politically powerful IG Joseph Chandy Every once in a while, it’s quite fun to watch a ‘mass’ thriller. It’s our modern version of the morality tale with a clear triumph of the good over bad, greys be damned. It provides a cathartic joy for audiences to see the antagonist gradually get his comeuppance. And in this post-pandemic period, we can certainly do with that. Shaji Kailas returns to Malayalam after a gap with the sort of genre he is best at. But the difference between Kaduva and Kailas’s 90s hits such as Ekalavyan and Commissioner, or any of those kind of revenge films from the period, such as Bhoomiyile Rajakkanmar or Dhruvam, is that when the hero gets back at the antagonist, it is by setting deliciously clever traps, smooth or bombastic dialogue and a few punches. Kaduva, written by Jinu V Abraham, is more brawn than brain. The film has been embroiled in court cases in the past couple of years, with a Jose Kuruvinakunnel claiming that the film is defamatory to himself and his family. Case notwithstanding, the film tells the story of Kaduvakunnel Kuriyachan (Prithviraj), a Pala planter, in the 90s, who ends up on a coalition course with IG Joseph Chandy (Vivek Oberoi), a top cop who is politically favoured. What starts as a misunderstanding over a piano gifted to the local church, where a wayward priest has been posted, slowly develops into a fight that grows bigger and big...

Kaduva Movie Review: Prithviraj Sukumaran & Shaji Kailas Bring Back The 'Naadan' Action In Style!

Kaduva, the highly anticipated Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer has finally released. The senior filmmaker Shaji Kailas made a massive comeback to the film industry after a long gap of over 8 years with Kaduva, which is a period action film set in the 1990s. Vivek Oberoi plays the lead antagonist in the Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer, which is bankrolled by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames. Plot Kaduvakunnel Kuriyachan AKA Kurian Koruthu (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is a successful planter who leads a peaceful life with his wife Elsa (Samyuktha Menon) and three kids. He is a much-loved and respected personality in his locality. However, things take a different turn after Kuruvachan gets into a major clash with IG Joseph Chandy IPS (Vivek Oberoi), a senior police officer. Script & Direction Shaji Kailas, one of the most celebrated filmmakers of Malayalam cinema, makes a fantastic comeback with this entertaining action film. Scriptwriter Jinu Abraham has made Kaduva an engaging cinematic experience with his carefully-crafted script, despite having a not-so-new premise. The biggest strength of Kaduva is the way it handles the face-off between two equally powerful men. The film worships its hero, but does not always portray him as the most flawless man. Instead, what we get is a tussle between two flawed and egoistic men who go beyond all limits to win. Both the protagonist and antagonist get well-defined character arcs, and the face-off between them is highly impactful. The well-p...

Kaduva review: Prithviraj's film no match for Kuruvachan's real

And unlike Shaji Kailas' blockbusters of the yore, there is no ensemble cast, making it a complete Prithviraj show, with his close-ups and cuts filling in the gaps Growing up in Central Travancore, it was commonplace to hear the maxim: Do not get too cosy with the cops or the clergy – because they could make your life hell if you rubbed them the wrong way. Or you had to be someone with deep pockets and willpower, and an intractable Pala ‘Achayan’ to boot like Jose Kuruvinakunnel, aka Kuruvachan, on whom the movie Kaduva is based. Having known Kuruvachan since childhood, Kaduva, however, turns out to be a damp squib for this reviewer, especially since Kuruvachan’s real-life story had all the elements to make for a great thriller. That should explain why Kuruvachan went all the way to stop Kaduva from getting released, albeit unsuccessfully. Back in 1998, when Shaji Kailas was shooting FIR with Suresh Gopi in the lead in and around Pala, he came to know about Kuruvachan from Renji Panicker and that is how the idea took shape. A couple of decades later, Prithviraj saw an opportunity to make a mass entertainer, like the ones you associate with Shaji Kailas from his golden run in the 90s. With a story dating back to that period, Kaduva was supposed to make commercial potboilers back in vogue in Mollywood. Alas, Kaduva turns out to be anything but. Why did 'Kaduva' makers change protagonist's name before film hit theatres?

'Kaduva', the much-anticipated movie of the month directed by Shaji Kailas and headlined by Prithviraj, hit the theatres on Thursday. But before its release, the movie had to face a lot of hurdles, including a face-off with another film on the same subject which had actor Surech Gopi playing the lead. Though the Prithviraj-starrer had ultimately prevailed it had to lick its wounds till the last few hours before the release as the censor board suggested a change in the name of the protagonist. https-www-onmanorama-com-acp https-www-onmanorama-com-entertainment-entertainment-news onmanorama-topic-general-topics-76-entertainment-news https-www-onmanorama-com-entertainment onmanorama-topic-person-34-prithviraj 6c1kg5v0iil3mm3fod8o1c16 onmanorama-topic-movie-4-malayalam-cinema onmanorama-topic-general-topics-27-movies
