Combai

The Combai is a strong, alert dog who looks almost like a dingo. This canine has a rich short coat that is close fitting to their strong muscular body. Like the Rhodesian Ridgeback, they have a ridge of fur that runs down their spine. They are native to Southern India, specifically to the Tamil Nadu region. As a working dog breed, they originally were used by the Indian Royalty to hunt bear, tigers, and other dangerous animals. These days this attractive dog is used as a guard dog for rural farmers, householders, or as a companion dog. The Combai is becoming a rare dog, even in their homeland, with many experts believing them to be on the verge of extinction. Many Indian dogs have been dominated by the European Breeds that many people have seen as more fashionable and valuable than the native dog. In their favor, the Combai dog is known to be fierce towards their enemies, and intensely loyal to their family. They have a natural resistance to disease and parasites in Southern India which has produced a strong and hardy animal. They love to be close to their family, and are known to be gentle and tolerant with small children in their family 'pack'. Eager to please their master, this dog has an intensity and commitment that is highly valued by their owners. An ancient breed, the Combai is believed to have a lineage traceable back to the 15th century or even earlier. This dog, with their rich red coat and black mask, was a popular breed in ancient times. People valued their st...

Kombai Dog: The Bull Terrier of Tamil Nadu (Breed Guide)

Named, typically, after the town in Kerala they originated from, the Kombai is another Indian sighthound. Other names include Indian Bore Hound (or dog) or Combai. However, these aren’t your typical hunting dogs. With physical features resembling a terrier, the Kombai does not have the 270 degree field of vision of its hunter relative – . However, its bulkier frame and stronger jaws make it perfectly suited for its intended job: hunting bears and other large animals. The earliest records of the Kombai go back 600 years. The locals of Kerala believe the Maravar kings bred them as their royal dogs in the 9th century BCE. There are no records to back this up but it is a great story. They are believed to be descended from the other sighthounds, who originated in Central Asia, but there has been little study of this breed, so nobody knows for sure. The Kombai dogs are increasingly rare mainly because they’re no longer used for their hunting roles. And with the need for guard dogs disappearing due to modern technology, few people can afford or want to keep this breed in India. Like many of the sighthounds of India, they are in real danger of going extinct. RECOMMENDED: Kombai Basic Profile Friendliness:Overall, the Kombai ranks below average for friendliness. Although they’re excellent with family and friends, they can be aggressive towards strangers and/or other dogs. Children have to be wary of how they act around these dogs, as they can get irritated with foul play. Adaptabil...
