About Gurudongmar Lake Named after the noted Guru Padmasambhava, Gurudongmar Lake holds much significance. The lake is believed to be sacred by the Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists. Legends say that the lake was blessed by Guru Padmasambhava due to the appeal by the local people. Owing to its high altitude location, the lake remained frozen most of the year. So, the local people asked for help from Padmasambhava who placed his hands on a part of the lake which stopped freezing even during the winters and thus offered drinking water to the people. Since this incident, the lake was believed to be sacred and pilgrims began to carry the sacred water back in containers. Another tale goes like this Sikh Guru Nanak Dev passed through the lake in the 15th century and when the people prayed to him to help them, he touched a part of this lake with his walking stick and that portion of this lake stopped freezing throughout...

Tour of Lachung, Yumthang & Zero Point

Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Zero Point in North Sikkim are all about stunning views of snow mountains, magnificent valleys and rivers. Dr. Joseph Hooker in his 'Himalayan Journal' of 1855 mentioned that Lachung and Yumthang are the two most picturesque places in the whole of Sikkim and had even compared them to valleys of Switzerland. The river Teesta flows alongside the road from Mangan to Chungthang and you can see a number of waterfalls and mountain springs along the way. One of the best and popular waterfalls of North Sikkim is Naga Falls which is located 17kms from Mangan on the way to Chungthang. You will see many tourist vehicles making a stop here. About 11kms ahead of Chungthang towards Lachung (30 minutes drive) you will come across a wonderful waterfall known as Bhim Nala (also known as Amitabh Bachchan Waterfalls because a scene of the film 'Ankhen' was shot here with actor Amitabh in it). Take a break here for 10 minutes and enjoy the lovely view of the fall roaring down from high above and splashing into the ground near you. The sound of the gushing water can be heard from far and the water is really cold. Lachung is in North Sikkim. Most of the houses are made of wood, surrounded by small kitchen gardens around winding roads, small stepped grassy fields, wandering cows, interrupted every now and then by a small shop. Here, you would feel like you have been transported to a different time, except that you still get to use your smartphone when you get the network. Climate And Best Time To Visit Lachung offers great views of snow capped mountain peaks around the year. It is surrounded by waterfalls on the mountain routes. In the winter season, the region receives snow. The best time to visit is during the summer or autumn, avoiding the monsoon which brings landslides, and winter, during which many routes are closed due to snowfall. Getting There & Getting Around Lachung Due to its close proximity to the China border, any visitor to Lachung is required to have a special permit, for which you need to apply one day before from Gangtok via a travel agent.
