Bharat Ratna to Padma Bhushan, Lata Mangeshkar's awards list is legendary

By Anindita Mukherjee: In a rather saddening piece of news, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is no more. The singing maestro tested Covid positive on January 8 and was rushed to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital where she was under observation in the ICU. She passed away today (February 6) at the age of 92. Lata Mangeshkar was an asset to the film industry and her immense contribution to playback singing will remain in our hearts for eternity. The legendary singer was a recipient of numerous awards throughout her extensive singing career. To name a few, she was honoured with the Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, National Awards, State Awards, Filmfare Awards, and many more. Today (February 6), we will not mourn Lata Mangeshkar. We will celebrate her and remember the singing maestro for who she was. Thus, we retrace the legendary singer's immense contribution to Indian cinema through the numerous awards she was honoured with in her glorious life. Why PM Modi honoured with first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday evening PM Modi honoured with first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award (ANI) It further stated that “the spectacular progress that has, and, is taking place in every aspect and dimension in our beloved nation is driven and inspired by him. He is indeed one of the greatest leaders our great nation has seen in its glorious history of thousands of years". The Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award was instituted in the memory and honour of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who had passed away at the age of 92 on February 6 this year. The award will be given every year to only one individual who has made path-breaking, spectacular and exemplary contributions to the nation, its people, and the society, as per the statement by the charitable trust. While receiving the award, he dedicated it to the citizens of the country. Addressing the award ceremony, he said that music gives a feeling of “motherhood and love”. “We all are fortunate that we have seen the power of music, this power in the form of Lata didi,” he added. Adding that Lata didi was also his elder sister apart from being “an empress to music”, he said that she has given the “gift of love and emotion to generations.” April 24 also marks the 80th death anniversary of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar - the singing legend's father.

An official of the directorate of culture, when asked why Lata Mangeshkar award was not conferred since 2018, on the condition of anonymity said "The award is given a year after normally in the month of October. The award for 2019 should have been given in the year 2020 but it couldn't be done because of Covid pandemic. The meetings of the jury got delayed and the name of recipients couldn't be decided. But, notification of the award for the year 2021 has already been issued and the award for 2020 and 2021 would definitely be given in the month of October and for this year also, it could be given then only after the passing away of the legendary singer." Covid may serve as an alibi for the officials for the delay in conferring the award but not only Lata Mangeshkar award but all the top cultural awards of the state government including Shikhar Samman, Tansen Samman or Babir Samman is not being regularly given and at times, they are given to recipients of five to six years together, said an official, who works with one of the top cultural institutions of the state. The Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar was featured in the 'In Memoriam' segment of the British Academy of Film and Television Awards ( BAFTA 2022). Mangeshkar, the voice of generations of Indians, passed away on February 6 due at age 92 to multiple organ failure. To pay homage to the prolific musician, BAFTA Awards 2022, regarded her as "an Indian playback singer, who recorded an estimated 25,000 songs for more than 1,000 Hindi films over a career spanning 70 years". BAFTA 2022 pays tribute to Lata Mangeshkar In the Memoriam segment, BAFTA 2022 described her as the first Indian artist to perform in the Royal Albert Hall back in 1974. "Her film credits list is vast, but notable songs featured in Anamika (1973), Aasha (1980), Dil Se.. (1998) and Rang De Basanti (2006).
