THE LIGER

THE LIGER A liger is a hybrid big cat that results from the crossbreeding of a lion and a tiger. A liger has a male lion as its father and a tigress as its mother. Since lions and tigers are very closely related species, therefore; the crossbreeding in between these two animals to produce is liger is highly possible. It should be very important to note here that all the ligers are born in captivity and so far there has never been any evidence of a liger's birth in the wild. A liger is an offspring of a male lion and a tigress. Ligers belong to the hybrid category of the big cats. However; according to the experts this phenomena of crossbreeding of a lion and a tigress in the wild to produce a liger would have happened thousands of years ago, when there were hundreds of thousands of lions and tigers living at different overlapping territories on planet earth. Unfortunately; there is no common territory in the world right now where both lions and tigers co-habit. Most classifications separate the tiger species into six subspecies. These include the Siberian tiger, the Bengal tiger, the Sumatran tiger, the Indo-Chinese tiger, the South China tiger, and the Malayan tiger. Some classifications merge these subspecies, and others suggest that two distinct tiger species exist. The world’s tiger population has declined to about 3,200 tigers since the beginning of the 21st century. A century earlier, the same population was estimated at 100,000. Liger: A Hybrid Between Lion & Tiger

Do you enjoy watching big cats? Then, lions, Tigers, leopards, Liger, Tigon, and jaguars could be your favorite animals to learn about. If you know anything about animals, you are probably aware that the cheetah is the fastest globally and that the Tiger always loves to swim. So, you’ll enjoy today’s Wonder of the Day. There’s nothing to know that’s better than these tigers! These are hybrids produced from the cross mate of lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris). Although the parents of these tigers belong to the same genus, they are of different species. These tigersare distinguished from similar hybrids known as tigons, and they are the largest of all living cats. Like lions, ligers also enjoy swimming that is a characteristic of all tigers. They usually grow larger than either of their parents, as opposed to tigons. Liger Classification and Evolution: Liger size: They grow up to 12ft in height when standing on their hind legs, making them one of the world’s largest cats. Liger and Tigon: A Liger is usually bigger than either of its parents because it is a cross between a Lion and a Tiger; that’s why this tiger has few qualities of a Tiger and few lions; mostly, they behave like Lions than Tigers. Some Ligers live in zoos around the world, either accidentally or deliberately. Largest liger: These are the world’s largest cats, and the largest living example is found in South Carolina at Myrtle Beach Safari. Guinness World Records lists “Hercules” as the world’s...

Liger – Zoological Wildlife Foundation

The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a tigress . Thus, it has parents with the same genus but of different species. It is distinct from the similar hybrid tigon. It is the largest of all known extantfelines. The liger is often believed to represent the largest known cat in the world. Males reach a total length of 3 to 3.5 m. Ligers enjoy swimming, which is a characteristic of tigers, and are very sociable like lions. Ligers exist only in captivity because the habitats of the parental species do not overlap in the wild. Historically, when the Asiatic Lionwas prolific, the territories of lions and tigers did overlap and there are legends of ligers existing in the wild. Notably, ligers typically grow larger than either parent species. Ligers have a tiger-like striped pattern that is very faint upon a lionesque tawny background. In addition they may inherit rosettes from the lion parent (lion cubs are rosetted and some adults retain faint markings). These markings may be black, dark brown or sandy. The background colour may be correspondingly tawny, sandy or golden. In common with tigers, their underparts are pale. The actual pattern and colour depends on which subspecies the parents were and on how the genes interact in the offspring. • Our tours are conducted Monday through Sunday between 8:30 am – 6:00 pm* (BY RESERVATION ONLY). • Office hours are Monday through Sunday between 8:30 am – 6:00 pm. • All tours must be pre-booked at least 24 hours in advance....

Are Ligers Real?

Ligers are the result of crossbreeding a male lion and a female tiger. Although the two belongs to genus Panthera, they belong to separate species. The lion is of Leo species while the tiger is a Tigris. Ligers are usually larger and heavier than either of the parents. Ligers inherit different traits from the parents. They are good swimmers just like tigers and social like the lions. If the opposite happens, i.e. a female lion mates with a male tiger, then a Tigon is born. Ligers are larger than tigons. Size and Growth of Ligers Ligers are the largest known animal in the cat species in the world. Males can gain length of up to 11.8 feet and a weight of 900 pounds. Ligers have a tiger-like appearance with faint stripes against a background of tan color of the lion. Ligers are known to roar like the lions and chuff the way tigers do. Male ligers wear a modest mane with spots on the ears like those of tigers. Some ligers may have rosettes like those of lions. The underside is pale like that of a tiger with some spots. The appearance of a liger is determined by the actual subspecies of the parents and the interaction of genes in the offspring body. For example, if you cross breed a lion with a white tiger, the resulting liger cub will have a pale golden color. Life Span of Ligers The lifespan differs from a few weeks after birth to several years. In Hogle Zoo located in Salt Lake City, a liger was born on May 14, 1948, and died 24 years later in 1972. Other records of ligers a...
