How to Draw a Lion in Pencil — Online Art Lessons

Class Description In this class we will draw the king of the animal kingdom, the lion. During the class you will learn : 1) How to deal with the background - when to add one, when to leave it out 2) How to draw the short hair on the body 3) How to draw the matted mane hair 4) How to draw the lion's face and ears 5) How to draw the long flowing mane hair 6) and much more... I start by laying down a light tonal value over the entire paper using a cloth dipped in graphite powder. I then use the cloth to stretch out the basic tonal value in the lion. This step allows me to quickly get a feel for the drawing as I am able to picture the lion within a few minutes. As you can see I am not trying to create details or even shadings. I am simply laying down abstract shapes. Now we can start drawing the lion. I will alternate between drawing with my pencils and erasing using a pen shaped eraser. We will start with the body and hind leg as it is the easiest. Using the chisel point pencil suggest the short hairs on the body and leg. Don't try to draw individual hairs though simply shading in the same direction as the hairs is enough. Left out the highlights using the eraser and a flicking motion. I don't spend too much time here as it is not the focal area. The main is pretty complex as it has the back area which is full of wiry matted hair and the front area which has long, light and flowing hair. This elementary instruction will be divided into ten steps in which very simple lines will be applied. Step 1 Use a circle to depict the head. Below the head sketch out the torso of our lion. Step 2 Using simple lines draw out the front paws of our lion, as in my example. Step 3 Depicture the rear legs in the same way that we drew the front paws in the second step. Step 4 With the help of ovals draw out eyes and nose on the head.
