Mac Mini M2 (2023) review: A small box with few compromises

Price: $799 Processor: Apple M2 (8-core CPU, 10-core GPU) RAM: 8 GB Storage: 512GB SSD Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 4, 2x USB-A. HDMI out, Ethernet, 3.5mm headphone jack Size: 7.8 x 7.8 x 1.4 inches Weight: 2.6 pounds Now, I know what you’re thinking. What is a Mac Mini doing on Laptop Mag? But here me out, weighing a scant 2.6 pounds, the Mini is lighter than a lot of laptops on the market and a lot more compact. With that out of the way, let’s talk about what we’ve got here. The Mac Mini M2 delivers all the power of Apple’s M2 silicon in a lightweight box that can slip into a backpack or purse. And with a starting price of $599 ($799 reviewed), the Mac Mini M2 is a mobile marvel that will pique the interest of many a consumer. It’d just be nice if you could swap out or repair the system yourself. My one complaint aside, the Mac Mini is a viable option for shoppers looking for a powerful, compact system under $1,000. Just be sure you have a nice display handy. Mac Mini M2 pricing and configuration Affordability, thine name is Mac Mini M2. The base model of the system costs $599 and has an 8-core (4 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores) M2 chip, 8GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD, 10-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. My review unit has double the storage which jacks the price up to $799. The M2 Mac Minis can be configured with up to 24GB of memory and 2TB SSD, which will of course, cost more. Apple Mac mini (2023) review: forget Windows 11, this is the best PC you can buy

The Mac mini (2023) is by far the best mini PC you can buy right now. Apart from the design, Apple has improved its most affordable Mac by every metric: it’s more powerful, comes with an option for an even more powerful M2 Pro chip, and the price of its base model is cheaper than ever. If you’re looking for a compact PC to sit unobtrusively on your desk, in a studio, or even under a TV, this is an excellent choice – even die-hard Windows users may be tempted. While we were all expecting Apple to announce the M2 Pro and M2 Max, alongside follow-ups to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks from 2021 at some point, the new Mac mini was a genuine surprise, and once more details emerged, that surprise turned increasingly pleasant. The Apple Mac mini (2023) now comes with an (Image credit: Future) However, Apple also surprised everyone by announcing a version of the Mac mini (2023) that comes with the brand-new M2 Pro chip. This is also featured in the high-end MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch and offers a huge amount of power. Along with more unified memory (up to 32GB), the Mac mini (2023) is now a seriously impressive workstation PC. • Apple Mac Mini M2 (2023) (256GB Silver) at Amazon for $597.50 Perhaps best of all, Apple has packed all this new power into the same compact dimensions that many of us have come to love about the Mac mini. You’d be seriously pushed to find a computer that matched the performance on offer here in a similar size. Apple’s final surprise rega...

Apple Mac Mini (M2 Pro, 2023) Review: The Missing Piece

it's easy to overlook the Mac Mini: Apple’s small, squarish PC isn’t particularly exciting. It’s not The new Mac Mini is similar to It doesn't have to be showy. Whichever processor you get, the Mini is a smart and hassle-free way to get all the power most people need without emptying your wallet—and you actually have a say on what kind of peripherals to get. Photograph: Apple The Mac Mini still follows the BYODKM rule. The initialism, originally used by Steve Jobs when he announced the This BYO design is great news if you already have those peripherals. Plug everything in and you're good to go. Even if you're starting from scratch and building your workspace, it doesn't need to be too expensive. There are If you prefer tons of screens around your workspace, then you may be disappointed to learn that the base Mac Mini still only supports two external displays, just like the M1-powered model. That's enough for most people, but if you upgrade to the M2 Pro you can connect up to My main gripe with the Mac Mini is its ports. The M2-powered model has two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, two USB-A, an HDMI, a 10-gigabit Ethernet connection, and a 3.5-mm headphone jack. If you upgrade to the M2 Pro version, you get two extra Thunderbolt 4 ports. But I wish Apple brought the same selection from the Mac Studio, with two USB-C ports and an SD card slot on the front of the machine. Base model ‌Mac mini‌ machines come with either an ‌M2‌ or ‌M2‌ Pro chip, and like the now-discontinued Intel model, the ‌M2‌ Pro has four Thunderbolt 4 ports while the ‌M2‌ version has just two. Other than that distinction, the two ‌Mac mini‌ models are identical externally, offering two USB-A ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Because Apple transitioned from an older Intel chip to an Apple silicon chip with the high-end ‌M2‌ Pro ‌Mac mini‌, there is no direct comparison that we can make. Other M-series chips already outperformed the prior-generation Intel ‌Mac mini‌, but to give some perspective, we thought we'd share some benchmarks comparing the ‌M2‌ Pro ‌Mac mini‌ to the The ‌M1 Max‌ MacBook Pro features a 10-core CPU and 32-core GPU, and the higher-end base ‌Mac mini‌ with ‌M2‌ Pro chip features a 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU. Apple Mac mini (2023, M2 Pro) Review

If you’re after laptop buying advice, I’m your man. I’ve been reviewing PCs and technology products for more than a decade. I cut my teeth in PC Labs, spending several years with PCMag.com before writing for other outlets, among them LaptopMag.com and Tom’s Guide. While computers are my main focus, I’ve also written at length about topics ranging from fitness gear and appliances to TV and home theater equipment. If I’ve used it, I have opinions about it, whether somebody’s paying me to write them up or not. I get a sense of deja vu every time I look at the Apple Mac mini (starts at $599; $1,799 as tested). Freshly updated for 2023 with M2 and M2 Pro processing and graphics, the most striking thing about the Mac mini may be how little the look has changed. The first one I reviewed was then, we were discussing the fact that it was identical to the previous model. But Apple isn't churning out a tired copy of a copy—far from it. Instead, the company poured its effort into what matters most: not what a machine looks like, but what it can do. And judged by that metric, the 2023 Mac mini models are a revelation, packing more power into that tiny chassis than ever before, and even doing it at a lower starting price. Don't let the samey look fool you: This isn't 2012's—or even 2020's—Mac mini. This is a fury in a minimalist chassis. It's a little dynamo-in-waiting. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. (Opens in a new...
