By Sunil Bhat: Veteran Congress leader and member of the erstwhile Royal Family of Jammu and Kashmir endorsed the demand of locals to declare September 23, his father’s birth anniversary, a public holiday. Karan Singh is a former Rajya Sabha MP and son of Raja Hari Singh- the last ruler of J&K. Locals here, particularly those from the Rajput community, have been protesting for the last fortnight in Jammu city with the demand to declare September 23 a public holiday in honour of the last Maharaja.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a committee regarding issue of commemoration of birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh ji and its observance in general under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” reads an order issued by the principal secretary, Manoj Dwivedi. The committee will be headed by principal secretary, General Administration Department while administrative secretary, Social Welfare Department; administrative secretary, Culture Department and divisional commissioner, Jammu, will be its members. Maharaja Hari Singh was born on September 23, 1895 in Jammu and died on April 26, 1961 in Mumbai. His son Karan Singh is J&K’s former Sadr-e-Riyasat and Governor and is a senior Congress leader. The Jammu-based parties including Congress have been demanding that the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh be declared a public holiday in J&K. The Yuva Rajput Sabha had recently threatened mass agitation in Jammu to press for the demand. The State Subject law that was prevalent in J&K before abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A was imposed by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1927 to protect the interests of the people. Jammu: J&K government Monday notified a holiday “on account of the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh” to be observed on September 23 every year across Jammu and Kashmir under the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881. “To commemorate the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji, September 23 of every year will be observed as a holiday in government offices and educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir under Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881 (Central Act 26 of 1881),” read an order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) Secretary Piyush Singla. On September 15, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the decision of the J&K government to declare Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary a public holiday. LG Sinha had made this announcement following his meeting with a delegation of prominent political leaders, members of the Yuva Rajput Sabha, and civil society members including the head of the J&K Transport Union at the Raj Bhavan. “The government has decided to declare Maharaja Hari Singhji’s birthday as a public holiday. Jammu, Sep 19 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Government on Monday declared the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh, which falls on September 23, as an annual holiday in the union territory. "To commemorate the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh ji, 23rd of September every year shall be observed as a holiday in government offices and educational institutions across the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881," a notification issued by General Administration Department (GAD) secretary Dr Piyush Singla read. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha made the announcement regarding the decision on Thursday, following which people in Jammu city danced and distributed sweets to celebrate the development the next day. Jammu: A major controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir over the birthday of the last King of Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh - 55 years after his death. Hari Singh's grandsons, members of the ruling PDP and BJP, are demanding that the day should be marked as a state holiday. But some political forces in the valley say that given the struggle against the Maharaja for the transition from autocracy to democracy, such a move would be inappropriate. In Jammu today, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh was heckled by those demanding the day be declared a state holiday. Maharaja Hari Singh's grandson and PDP legislator Vikramaditya Singh has been spearheading the campaign. Mr Singh has written a letter to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for the cause. The campaign has also found support from Ajat Shatru Singh, the second grandson of Hari Singh, Vikramaditya's brother and a BJP legislator.
