Meet The Kolkata Family Behind The World's Finest Teas

Dipankar Chatterjee (left) and son Rudra Chatterjee run the Luxmi Group from Kolkata Image: Debarshi Sarkar for Forbes India Tea has been done a great disservice by being called a commodity,” says Rudra Chatterjee, managing director of Kolkata-based Luxmi Group. “When you buy wine or olive oil, you see the name of the grower or producer on the bottle; but when you buy tea, you see the name of the distribution company, not the producer. This is something we want to change.” “Tea is an industry that requires a planter’s mindset; it is different from finance or banking,” says Dipankar Chatterjee, chairman of Luxmi Group, and Rudra’s father. “You require knowledge of both the people and the environment, and you require time. Tea doesn’t grow immediately; it needs nurturing and tending over years.” Staying true to this approach, the Luxmi Group has expanded to include 25 estates, produce 30 million kg of tea every year, and employ a workforce of 30,000 people. It also found its way to the British Queen when Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted her Silver Tips Imperial tea from the Makaibari estates in West Bengal during his state visit to the UK in 2015. Along the way, the group has grown from being a tea-producer to becoming a world leader in hand-woven carpets, and, more recently, the maker of fine wooden furniture. In 1998, Dipankar acquired Obeetee, “which was a well-run business that Edward Oakley used to manage”, and which now employs over 30,000 carpet weavers from 900 vi...

Darjeeling's Makaibari Bungalow is your very own tea estate abode in the hills

However, even as it helps you stay close to your urbane rituals, the Makaibari Bungalow makes it easy somehow to distance yourself from the rat race and give in to the joys of slow living. The view across the expansive glass wall in the living room is so tranquil, you will find any disquieting voices in your head instantly hushed into silence. As far as the eye can see, an endless gathering of mountains plays peekaboo with cotton clouds. (Rest assured that at some point during your stay here, the clouds will drift into the property and caress you on their way out.) The silence inside, underlined with the subtle aromas of flowers and dense foliage wafting in from the Makaibari has a long history of organic farming practices. In fact, the guided tour of the tea garden offers a clear picture of how deeply nature is revered in this part of the world. “This 550-acre tea estate is the steepest in Darjeeling, and to counter the challenges of the terrain, right at the outset, the owners relied on bio-mimicking based on advanced permaculture practices,” informs Sanjay Das, the tea estate manager. Even though the estate spans over six mountain ridges and is hemmed in by nearly 1,100 acres of forests, grasses and weeds, making it intensely difficult to supervise, the lean, sprightly Das negotiates the terrain with enviable ease. A repository of animated tales on tea cultivation at his disposal, he stirs awe as he explains some of the quaint practices that go into making the world’s f...

She lives, or lived at the time as she appears to have disappeared from the internet, in Darjeeling and from what I understood bought her tea more or less directly from the estate. Cool, eh? She sent me this white tea, a first flush and a muscatel. I finished off the latter two long ago. I had this on the to-be-finished pile, but I was finally inspired to finish off the rest of it now when I watched a program on Viasat History with Victoria Wood travelling around the Commonwealth and visiting the former British colonies and specifically places that were named after Queen Victoria, as she were. Naturally she also came to Darjeeling and was presented with the idea of ‘white tea’, supposedly for the first time. “Everybody knows tea is brown. Two sugars. And milk. Indian tea. From China.” or some such I believe her bemused quote was. Anyway, she visited an organic tea plantation, the owner of which was called Rajah. I remembered that Makaibari is organic and I thought I remembered hav...

This Expensive Tea Is Harvested Only When There's A Full Moon

Similar belief is on display each year at a farm in India that has produced the nation's most expensive Camellia sinensis) that once sold for $1,850 per kilogram. It's called Silver Tips Imperial, and it has earned a spot on While other estates in the area harvest the tea, Makaibari is the only estate to only do it during full moon nights, the BBC said. Whether it's the harvest method or pure genetics, what results is a tea that The farming techniques the estate uses involve "some science, some myth," Rudra Chatterjee, the current owner of the Makaibari estate, told Mint Lounge. Adhering to a harvesting strategy where leaves and buds can only be picked during a full-moon night means plucking can only happen four to five times per year from March to October, the BBC notes. Those at the Makaibari farm believe that exposing the leaves and buds to sunlight after they are picked changes their consistency and aroma. The resulting scarcity contributes to the tea's high price, but it isn't only commercial reasons why the estate limits harvests, which as the BBC says are "part spiritual, part ceremonial." The news outlet reports that workers dress in West Bengal attire, men play drums, and women dance and chant prayers. Torches fueled with tallow deter leopards and help the harvesters see.

The record

Just before the summer solstice this year, on the full moon night of June 13, from a minute past midnight to 3 am, specially trained women plucked the two leaves and a bud by the light of hand-held tallow torches at Makaibari Estates in Darjeeling. The plucking time of 2 hours, 59 minutes was fixed after intensive study of the biodynamic calendar and precise astronomical charts. Rajah Banerjee, Chairman of Makaibari, explained that during the full moon, water content in all life forms decreases. "What you have in the tender tea leaves and bud is the disitilled essence of the plant with all its subtle flavours and characters". A very small amount of limited reserve Silver Tips Imperial was produced and acquired by only 3 buyers in the world in the UK, Japan and by us here. The sale was covered by the

Description The Makaibari Tea Estate is probably the most talked about and fabled tea garden in Darjeeling area. And there are reasons for that. This is one of the oldest tea gardens in Darjeeling and was the first to establish a factory in the year 1859. Over the past four generations, the estate has been run by the original founders family, the Banerjees who once hailed from South Bengal. Today most tea garden owners of Darjeeling area are multinational companies located in Kolkata or elsewhere, except Makaibari.Swaraj Kumar Banerjee (better known as) Rajah Banerjee is the last single owner in the family who now manages the Makaibari Tea Estate, and is resident here. He is the first person in Darjeeling having introduced organic farming, thus breaking away from the prevailing local practices and harmonizing it with the nature. This was the first garden in the world that was certified by 'Fare Trade' and the first to appoint women in a supervisory position. It went on to become one of the finest tea gardens in the world commanding highest prices at the tea auctions for some of its brands like Silver Tip. • 1
