Manya Singh: 'It was my dream to buy a house for my parents!'

Manya Singh, who was hailed as the auto drivers' daughter who won the crown at Femina Miss India 2020, has achieved a milestone and fulfilled the first ever wish she made soon after winning the crown. The dream and efforts of a 14-year-old have paid off, and she credits her parents for their constant support and belief in her. Amid difficulties in making ends meet, Manya's father made sure to provide his kids with education; and today, the nation lauds the queen for her simplicity and humble upbringing. Working multiple jobs, taking tuition for kids in the slum, completing her education and preparing for the national pageant, Manya sure had her hands full, but she managed to accomplish everything, and she finally fulfilled her dream to buy her parents a home they could call their own! Expressing her emotions on the joyous moment of her life, Manya said, "My mom used to believe that we would never be able to afford a house in Mumbai, and down the line, we will all have to move back to Uttar Pradesh despite working hard all our life. But it was my dream to buy a house for my parents in their name so that they could feel secure enough to call Mumbai their own city. My parents gave me the opportunity and worked extremely hard so that I could have a good life in the city of dreams, and so I wanted to do my part and gift them a house. Now I can't wait to decorate the new home and make it our sweet paradise." • 1 Manya Singh: 'It was my dream to buy a house for my parents!' • 2 S...

Manya Singh, Miss India Runner

Remember that advertisement where a young woman dressed in a crisp white shirt reaches her swanky new office on her first day in an auto-rickshaw and when asked about her choice of conveyance, she declares with a proud tone that the auto driver is her father? That advertisement touched the hearts of many. Though that story was a made-up one, the story of recently crowned Miss India Runner-up Manya Singh with family(Instagram/manyasingh993 and missindiaorg) Manya Omprakash Singh, who was born in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh- the land chosen by the Gods for their incarnation, is the daughter of an autorickshaw driver. Manya has not had an easy childhood and she revealed about it in an Instagram post that featured pictures of her family. She penned a long inspirational note with the images, talking about her mother mortgaging her jewellery to let Manya complete her studies, her running away from home and doing various jobs just to survive, among other things. The caption read, "I've spent numerous nights without food and sleep. I've spent many afternoons walking for miles on end. My blood, sweat, and tears have amalgamated into courage to pursue my dreams. Being a rickshaw driver's daughter, I never had the opportunity to attend school as I had to start working in my teens. All the clothes I had were hand-me-downs. I yearned for books, but luck wasn't in my favour. Eventually, my parents mortgaged whatever little jewellery my mother had to ensure that I paid my exam fees in orde...

Life hasn't been easy for me but I've been harder on it: Miss India Manya Singh

"People like us don't even dream, and you're thinking of Miss India crown?" Manya Singh(Instagram) But Singh said she wanted to be a voice of women belonging to lower social strata and believed Miss India would give her the platform to achieve her goal. Born in Mumbai to an auto rickshaw driver and raised in the small town of Hata in Uttar Pradesh, the 19-year-old was crowned VLCC Femina Miss India 2020 runner-up in a ceremony last week. "I realised that there's this platform called Miss India where I can voice my stand and beliefs. Be the voice of those women who are told they don't have the right to speak, who are confined. "Especially in villages, where they don't even have freedom to choose what they wear, what to study. I realised long back I have to make it to Miss India, so all my hardships, all my steps were towards just this," Singh told PTI. Post her win, Singh said her parents are "extremely proud and overjoyed", but her journey to the pageantry was riddled with obstacles. Singh said coming from a lower middle class family of four, they were struggling to make ends meet. Her parents somehow managed to continue her schooling on "admission basis" and were only able to afford exam fees. "Life has not been easy for me but I've been harder on my life. At 14, I saw girls around me enjoying their life, wearing good clothes, attending school. I was aware my life isn't like theirs because I didn't have the same privilege." Singh, who has a younger brother, said while gro...

Nights Without Food Have Shaped Me: How Manya Singh Became Miss India

The daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver, Manya literally poured in her sweat and blood into reaching where she is today. From running away from home to working since she was a kid, Manya didn’t let life’s many hardships break her spirit, or rob her of her dream. And after years of struggle, the success she achieved is a glorious testament to her strength and hard work. In conversation with What was your first reaction to being crowned Miss India 2020 runner-up? It was indeed mixed feelings. I was happy, crying. I was excited for the future. It was indeed a gamechanger for me. I knew that once I win this crown, I will get to learn so many things and meet so many people. I had that motto, that if I get that platform, I will try my best to amplify those voices and I will be the voice for each and every girl and woman out there. And I got that opportunity and I’m really grateful. And I will make it worth it. You’ve talked about how you ran away from home, starved, and started working as a teenager to support your dreams. What kept you going during that time? Yes, I ran away from home at the age of 14. But before 14 I had a big life. I was suffering from my grandparents’ trauma. Mere parents suffer kar rahe the. I have seen those things in my life and that’s why at the age of 14, I was so mature that I want to do something different. And when I came to Mumbai, I didn’t have anything. I was completely blank… empty hands but dreams in my eyes and hope in my pocket. And I knew Mum...
