Kolkata weather: Maximum temp at 36.5 degree Celsius for second straight day, afternoon real

KOLKATA: The scorching sun on a dry Friday made Kolkata's real-feel temperature cross 40°C, leaving people exhausted. The maximum temperature clocked 36.5°C for the second consecutive day on Friday. At 1.30pm on Friday, Kolkata's real-feel temperature touched 42°C, according to private weather forecasting service AccuWeather. Real-feel temperature is an index describing what the temperature actually feels like, showing the combined effects of temperature, wind, humidity, sunshine intensity, cloudiness, precipitation and elevation on human body. All of these factors affect how warm or cold a person feels. The unanticipated surge in heat left pedestrians making frequent stops at ice-cream vendors and roadside shops for chilled snacks and beverages. Shopkeeper Binod Sahu said that he had unprecedented sales of electrolyte-based rehydration solutions and cold water on Friday. "I will have to install another pedestal fan or two to withstand the upcoming heat," he said, adding that he would have to restock his store with mostly cold beverages now to meet the heat-induced demand. A pedestrian stopping for shade and refreshment at his store said: "The sun feels like it's burning into the skin. I have to stop now and then on my way to work to avoid fatigue." The sudden onset of heat-wave like conditions has Kolkatans rushing to purchase air conditioners (ACs). "We started a sale for our ACs since April 1, keeping in mind the rising temperature. But it wasn't until today that we had...

Temperature in Kolkata hovers around 40 degree Celsius for 3 days straight

The The city had last experienced heatwave conditions in 2016 when the mercury had crossed 40°C on three consecutive days from April 11, during which the mercury had climbed up to 41.3°C. While the chances of a repeat were now unlikely in Kolkata, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in other districts of south Bengal — except South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore — till Tuesday. Dum Dum recorded a maximum of 40.9°C on Monday. Bankura, Purulia, East and West Burdwan, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Birbhum were likely to experience heatwave till April 28. Bankura recorded 43.9°C while Panagarh recorded 43.1°C and Asansol clocked 42.7°C on Monday. The gruelling conditions have prompted the RMC to issue an advisory for residents of south Bengal. It has asked people to avoid prolonged heat exposure, advised them to wear light coloured, loose cotton clothes, cover heads, use umbrellas and to drink sufficient water. Workers have been cautioned to avoid direct sunlight and those venturing out have been warned against heat strokes. “Recognize the signs of heat stroke, heat rash or heat cramps such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating and seizures,” it said. “Moisture incursion has not been adequate so far, which has prevented the formation of rain-triggering clouds despite the intense heat. Last week, conditions had turned favourable that led to thunderstorms in the western districts of Bengal, but the clouds didn’t reach Kolkata. Since there is no weather system i...

Heatwave batters India as mercury nears 45°C, but relief likely in northwestern plains soon, says IMD

By India Today News Desk: Heatwave conditions prevailed on Tuesday as the temperature crossed the 40 degrees Celsius mark in most parts of the country. Bundi in Rajasthan registered the maximum temperature at 45.2 degrees Celsius, the first of the season for the country, stated a Skymet weather report. Similarly, Prayagraj and Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh were the hottest at 44.2 degrees Celsius. In Delhi, too, hot weather conditions persisted for the third consecutive day with some weather stations recording the maximum temperature at least five degrees Celsius above normal. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said a western disturbance active in the western Himalayan region will provide some relief from the soaring temperatures in the plains of northwest India starting Tuesday. "Latest satellite and radar observations show the movement of an intense convective cloud mass across Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Himachal Pradesh, leading to favourable conditions for light to moderate rainfall with occasional intense spells of intense rain along with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and hailstorms over the region during next 3-4 hours," IMD said. Heatwave conditions have been prevailing in most parts of the country with the maximum temperature hovering near 45 degrees Celsius in some states. In Haryana, sizzling heat swept across Hisar as the mercury settled at 41.4 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT department. In Punjab, Bathinda recorded a maximum t...

Kolkata Temperature: Maximum temperature touches 40 degree Celsius again

The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Monday remained in the 40-degrees range, with Alipore logging 40°C, Salt Lake 40.5°C and Dum Dum 41.6°C. With moisture from the Bay of Bengal having started gathering, the possibility of thundershowers in East and West Midnapore, Jhargram and South 24 Pargana seems to be on the horizon between April 22 and 24. Although it is to early to be certain, the Alipore Met office said Kolkata might also receive rainfall, but not before April 24. "The only way to bring down temperatures and end a heat wave, like the prevalent one, is with rainfall. However, the showers that we are anticipating will not be widespread. Only four to five districts may witness one to two thunderstorms between April 22 and 24. As of now, the chances of Kolkata receiving rainfall are slightly lower. If it rains, it is unlikely to occur in the city before April 24," said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director G K Das. The RMC issued a heat wave warning on April 12, following three days of alerts of hot and discomfort weather between April 7 and 11. RMC deputy director-general Sanjib Bandyopadhyay said the continuous dry spell from April 2 to April 17 was quite exceptional. "While maximum temperature exceeding 40°C and heat waves were common during April in Bengal districts, it is usually interrupted with bouts of rainfall," he said. For the remaining period of the heat wave until April 21, Kolkata's maximum temperature is predicted to pivot around 40°C...
