Our Living Language In Standard English, most possessive pronouns have different forms when used as nouns, or nominals, as in That book is yours, than when used as adjectives, as in That is your book. The two exceptions are his and its, which retain the same form in both usages. The nominal forms all end in -s except for mine. In some Southern US and New England vernacular dialects, all nominal possessive pronouns end in -n, just like mine, as in That book is hern (but not "That's hern book") and Those cookies are ourn. Although forms such as hisn and hern are highly socially stigmatized, from a strictly linguistic standpoint these forms reflect a natural phenomenon in the development of all languages and dialects: Irregular patterns tend to be regularized, thereby eliminating exceptions to language "rules." Further, hisn, hern, ourn, yourn, and theirn have a long history in English. They arose in the Middle English period (c. 1100-1500) by analogy with mine and thine, forms that are older than my and thy and that can be traced to Old English (c. 449-1100). Originally, my and thy were used before nouns beginning with consonant sounds, as in my book, while mine and thine were used before nouns beginning with vowel sounds, as in mine eyes—as a and an still are. This distinction persisted into the 1700s. But as nominal pronouns, mine and thine remained unchanged. This invariant use of -n led to its use for all nominal possessive pronouns (except its, which is rarely used nomi...

Search of abandoned mine halted for missing man

PINEVILLE, W.Va.— The Director of the West Virginia Office of Miner’s Health, Safety, and Training said the agency has paused the search of an abandoned coal mine in Wyoming County for a missing man. “We worked from Sunday morning around 12:00 until 8:00 Sunday night, then we went back underground yesterday at 9:02 and worked until 7:00. We had three four-man teams and rotated them out,” said Frank Foster. Those teams found no trace of David McKinley Hess. The 50-year old Hess from Pineville was reported missing Sunday by his family. Police say Hess’ ATV was discovered outside the opening of the Robinson-Phillips Mine near Pineville. The discovery led some to believe he might have gone underground into the old mine works. The state mine rescue teams dealt with extremely difficult conditions to search the abandoned mine for Hess. Since the old mine works is no longer active, there is no ventilation or roof control and the teams worked in 12 to 24 inch coal to conduct the search. “We’re going to pause the search until we get more information about whether he may be inside,” said Foster. Hess is 5′-6″ and weights about 160 pounds. Anyone with information on Hess is asked to contact the Pineville Police Dept. at 304-732-6255.

A Republican two-term governor, Justice The lawsuit filed Tuesday says that over the past five years, the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement cited the companies for more than 130 violations. The lawsuit says the total amount of penalties, fees, interest and administrative expenses owed by the defendants is about $7.6 million. U.S. Attorney Christopher Kavanaugh of the Western District of Virginia said the defendants were ordered more than 50 times to stop mining activities until the violations were corrected. “Today, the filing of this complaint continues the process of holding defendants accountable for jeopardizing the health and safety of the public and our environment,” Kavanaugh said in a statement. Among the violations, the companies failed to ensure the seismic stability of a dam, to maintain sediment-control measures, to clear rock and debris from a haul road after a rock fall, and to properly dispose of non-coal waste. “Our environmental laws serve to prote...
