After the controversial biopic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is disgraced and self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s turn to see a fictionalised version of himself on screen. Producer Sunil Bohra will be producing the biopic on Asaram. Sunil has bankrolled movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, Shahid, Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu: Returns and Mastram. The Gujarat government will move the high court to challenge the acquittal of self-styled godman Asaram's wife, their daughter and his four disciples in a 2013 rape case in which he was sentenced to life imprisonment, an official said on Thursday. A court in Gandhinagar on January 31 sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment in the rape case filed by his former woman disciple in 2013. Asaram's wife Laxmiben, their daughter Bharati, and his four disciples, who were accused by the prosecution of aiding and abetting the crime, were acquitted by the court for want of evidence. The prosecution has also sought the government's consent to challenge the Gandhinagar court's January 31 order, in which it suggested that life sentences for Asaram in Jodhpur and Ahmedabad cases should run concurrently. The government's consent for the same is awaited, Kodekar said. The octogenarian godman is currently serving a life term in a Jodhpur jail in another case of raping a minor girl at his ashram in Rajasthan in 2013. The Gandhinagar court sentenced Asaram in the case for raping a woman disciple, who hailed from Surat, on several occasions from 2001 to 2007 at his ashram at Motera near Ahmedabad before her escape. In its order, the court said that Asaram sexually abused a victim of a younger age than his daughter and committed a crime that cannot be taken lightly. After seeing self-styled godman Asaram Bapu splashed across every platform, the world will now get to see the story of three courageous women who fought for justice against him, says the author of the book behind Asaram's upcoming biopic. Ushinor Majumdar has penned "God of Sin: The Cult, Clout and Downfall of Asaram Bapu" -- which will be cinematically adapted by filmmaker Sunil Bohra for his latest biopic on the disgraced godman and the women who took him down. "We've seen a lot on the godman both in print and television. This is the first book of its kind reporting on every aspect of the criminal empire of a bogus godman. Asaram led an interesting life. He also recalled meeting the godman at an airport. Talking about his impressions of the godman, he said that he was a good orator, but getting across all the complexities would ill be a tough task. The book introduces Asaram Bapu as someone who presided over a politically influential empire built on blind faith for decades. "Along with his son and heir, Narayan Sai, he has now become an example of everything that is wrong with self-styled godmen and the cults they spawn. "The two stand accused of sexual assaults on vulnerable devotees, land grabbing, money laundering, intimidation, exploitative black magic rituals and the horrific murder of witnesses who testified against them," it says.
