Kerala’s Demographic Shift: Three Axes Of Change And Salafism

On 14 June 2016, Krishnendhu R Nath, an Indian, now residing in Malaysia, was travelling in Kerala’s Malappuram district when she suddenly fell sick. Nath asked for lime soda. Her husband’s friend tried to buy it from a shop on the highway. The friend was told that it was a period when Ramzan fasting was on (the eighth day of the month) and no shop there could sell soda or any eatable for that matter. Piqued, Nath herself went and asked a shopkeeper what his problem was in selling a lime soda or lemon juice during the fasting season. She wondered what travellers would do when they are not fasting. The shopkeeper politely replied that he was eager to supply, but his shop will be destroyed after that. Nath, who recorded her nightmare in a Facebook post, said that she got similar responses from other shops too, forcing her to wonder if she was in Saudi Arabia. The stark reality in Malappuram — where Muslims make up 70 per cent of the population — is that it is not possible now for non-Muslims — Hindus or Christians — to open shops or restaurants during Ramzan and sell eatables. Former BBC journalist and director of South Asia Studies Project at Middle East Media Research Institute in Washington, Tufail Ahmed, recording his impressions in New Age Islam, says that local Hindus have been unable to protest and have willingly accepted their position as second-class citizens or ‘ dhimmis’. Things are changing in Muslim-dominated areas in Kerala. The month of Ramzan is now called Ra...

Why Muslims in Kerala are Leaving Islam

In probably a first in India, an organisation has been formed in Kerala to provide a platform to those who are renouncing Islam, a move which has significant socio-political implications. Although there are rationalist movements and religious reformist movements in our country, there was no organisation until now to represent those who leave a religion and want to continue as non-religious, neutral person(s). Now, a group of people who renounced Islam have come together to form ‘Ex-Muslims of Kerala’ and also decided to observe January 9 as ‘Kerala Ex-Muslim Day’. Moreover, considering India’s religious history, the ex-Muslims’ movement of Kerala can be viewed as a unique historical development. Islam has some unique traits as far as apostasy is concerned. Unlike other religions, Islam prescribes death penalty to apostates. In most Islamic countries, apostates face penal action. In a democratic country like India apostasy is not a crime but such people face socio-economic boycotts and even violence from the Muslim community. In India, Islamic clerics use various kinds of bullying tactics to intimidate those who renounce religion or criticise its tenets. Often these intimidation tactics violate the basic human rights of individuals. Eviction, ex-communication of families, family ex-communicating a member, forcing spouse of apostate to seek divorce, not allowing an apostate to contact their children, no share in inheritance, obstructing marriages etc. are some of the usual t...

Kerala Muslims economically better and literate, population growth rate higher: Report

Increasing population and limited participation in higher education are mainly blamed for backwardness of Though the economic status and the literacy level of Muslims in Kerala are better, still the rate of their population growth is higher that the national average, says the report by Centre for Policy Analysis, an independent and non-profit policy research body. According to the report, several programmes are run by the government for minorities but the schemes are not yielding the desired results because of their "improper" execution. The report citing the 2011 census said women participation in the workforce at the national level is 24.64 per cent but this rate is lowest in the Muslim community at 15.58 per cent. It said the low literacy rate negatively affects the availability of economic opportunities, which in turn affects the participation in the workforce. The report suggests the government bring changes in its programmes for minorities to achieve larger national goals and improve the condition of women. Don’t miss out on ET Prime stories! Rate of Muslim population rise fell more than Hindus’ in 20 years

While India’s Muslim population grew faster than the Hindu population between 1991 and 2001 and then between 2001 and 2011, the pace of growth declined more dramatically for Muslims than Hindus over these two decades, census data shows. Indeed, of all major religious communities in the country, the smallest decline in population growth between these two decades was in the case of Hindus while smaller groups such as Jains and Buddhists saw the sharpest drops. The 1991 census did not cover Jammu & Kashmir and therefore, growth rates have to be calculated excluding the erstwhile state, now split into two Union Territories. Excluding Jammu & Kashmir, the country’s overall population grew by 21.5% from 1991 to 2001, but by a lower 17.7% between 2001 and 2011. All religious communities contributed to this slowing down with each one seeing slower growth than in the previous decade. The decline in Hindu population growth was by 3.1 percentage points from 19.9% to 16.8%, the only major group for which the slowdown was less than the national average. Muslim population growth dropped by 4.7 percentage points from 29.3% to 24.6%, while the Christian, Experts agree that economic class and education levels, particularly of the mother, are the biggest determinants of fertility and hence population growth. Religion is at best a minor factor. This also explains why the population of Muslims in, say,
