O2 Movie Review Nayanthara Hotstar: Suffocating beyond a point

A mother going to any extent for her child is not just one of the oldest plot engines of our films, but also the most universal of all. The latest to join this burgeoning list of 'Amma sentiment'-based Tamil films is the Nayanthara-fronted O2. The mother sentiment angle being incorporated into the backdrop of a natural calamity is a smart move. O2 Movie Review: Logic be damned in Nayanthara's survival drama

By Janani K: Over the years, Nayanthara has spearheaded many women-centric films. Not every film turned out to be a huge hit compared to her commercial entertainers. But, that doesn’t stop our Lady Superstar from picking more such ventures in her career. Director GS Viknesh’s O2 is one such film, made with the sole intention of making a survival drama with a female lead. However, O2 lacks finesse and the so-called twists and turns ruin the entire experience. In some instances, it makes you ask, why me? O2 revolves around a bunch of people who get trapped in a landslide while they are on their way from Coimbatore to Cochin. Parvathy (Nayanthara) is a single mom to 8-year-old Veera (Rithvik), who suffers from cystic fibrosis. This means that Veera can breathe properly with the help of an oxygen cylinder. Similarly, there’s a couple waiting to elope, an en-MLA (RNR Manohar), a corrupt police officer (Bharath Neelakandan), a bus driver (Aadukalam Murgadoss) and a few others. When they get trapped inside a bus in a landslide, all of them go through different emotions. While on the brink of death, people change and the evil within them is unleashed. Will Nayanthara and her son escape on time? What will happen to the rest? O2 has a good premise for a survival drama. But, the proceedings are so juvenile that sometimes it makes you want to laugh out loud, even in serious moments. As the film begins, Parvathy talks about how Mother Nature can be ruthless when provoked. Every scene t...

O2 (aka) O2 Movie review

O2 is a survival drama film written and directed by GS Viknesh and produced by SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures. The film stars Nayanthara and Rithvik in the lead roles while Barath Neelakantan, Rishikanth and others play crucial supporting roles. The film has music by Vishal Chandrasekar and cinematography by Thamizh A Azhagan. Veera (Rithvik) is a kid with a medical issue in his lungs, which makes it difficult for him to breathe without an Oxygen tank. His mother Parvathy (Nayanthara) has to take him to Cochin so that his lung disease is treated. During the journey, their bus gets stuck underground due to a landslide. How they manage to survive nature's onslaught forms the rest of the film. O2 starts off with an animation sequence where a bird flies across all sources of pollution such as factories, dumpyards, roads with heavy traffic and drops a small plant in a flower pot. And then a small kid starts taking care of it on a daily basis. This makes us all think that the film is based on a message to save nature. But barring an explanation by Nayanthara at the start of the film, there seems to be little logical connection between the film and the message it wants to convey. The screenplay lags at many places, mainly due to the majority of the story is happening inside a bus. This doesn't mean that the film is bland in any sense. The film solely relies on Nayanthara and Rithvik's brilliant performances. Their chemistry is superb and is ...

O2 Review: The Nayanthara

It’s a warning signal for what is to come later. And it’s done in a way that children of all ages can understand the simple logic behind climate change. Only after this introductory piece do we see Parvathy (Nayanthara) jumping into a talk on nature and the kind of role it plays in our world. Everything’s inter-connected; so far so good. Parvathy is a plant expert. She seems to know what they do to survive the odds. “Survive” is the word that you’ll encounter the most in this review. O2 can also be filed under the “survival of the fittest” category. Oops, I did it again. Is this how writer-director GS Viknesh come up with the story? Ah, Parvathy isn’t just an expert in the field of plants. She also knows the nuts and bolts of the respiratory system. This is the point that helps her win the arguments in the bus. Why does she know so much about oxygen? Well, her son, Veera (Rithvik), needs an oxygen tank to help him breathe. Won’t a mother go to any length to make her child’s life safer? Viknesh keeps bringing up this pertinent relationship between a mother and nature – mother nature. This is a message-oriented movie. But it comes without any of the loudspeakers attached to it. Parvathy doesn’t shout in the climactic sequence. And she doesn’t bring her hands forward to plead with the viewers to plant saplings in our backyards. She’ll probably be happy if we do it though. But O2 isn’t that sort of a movie. It’s stitched together with numerous metaphors, however. All the impor...
