Suman K Bery appointed NITI Aayog's new Vice

Dr. Suman K Bery has been appointed the new Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog on April 22, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Greivances and Pensions informed in a release. Dr. Bery will be succeeding Dr. Rajiv Kumar who was serving as Vice-Chairman of the government agency since 2017. A non-resident fellow of Bruegel, economic policy research institution in Belgium's Brussels, Dr. Bery has previously served as the member of India’s Statistical Commission, Reserve Bank of India’s Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy as well as the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. Suman Bery takes over charge from Rajiv Kumar Bery will be succeeding Kumar who took over the Vice Chairmanship from Arvind Panagariya in 2017. Currently, Kumar serves as the Chancellor of Pune's Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Giri Institute of Development Studies in Lucknow. NITI Aayog vice chairman Rajiv Kumar, Dr Rajiv Kumar took over as NITI Aayog vice chairperson in 2017.(ANI) The Ministry of Personnel in a statement said that the appointments committee of the cabinet had accepted the resignation of Rajiv Kumar and appointed Suman Bery as the full-time member of the NITI Aayog and later as the vice chairperson from May 1. Kumar took over as vice chairman in August 2017 after his predecessor Arvind Panagariya exited the National Institution for Transforming India, better known as NITI Aayog, which replaced the Planning Commission. Suman Bery, who is likely to succeed Rajiv Kumar, was the director-general of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, or NCAER, one of the country's leading independent policy research institution, for 10 years from 2001 to 2011. Suman Bery to replace Rajiv Kumar as NITI Vice Chairman

Rajiv Kumar on Friday stepped down as Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman. The Government on Friday accepted his resignation and appointed noted economist Suman Bery as his successor with effect from May 1. According to an order issued by Department of Personnel & Training, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has accepted the resignation of Rajiv Kumar and relieving him from the post of the Vice-Chairperson, NITI Aayog w.e.f., April 30, 2022. The committee also appointed Suman K Bery initially as Full-Time Member, NITI Aayog with immediate effect and up to April 30 and afterward as Vice-Chairperson w.e.f. May 1, 2022. Earlier in the day, in a surprising move, Kumar submitted his paper after spending nearly five years in NITI. He was appointed after sudden exit of then Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya, who wad first Vice-Chairman of the think tank. Niti Aayog came into existence on January 1, 2015, replacing the decades-old Planning Commission. Prior to NCAER, Bery was with the World Bank in Washington D.C. Areas of focus included the macro-economy, financial markets, and public debt management with a focus on Latin America. From 1992-1994, on leave from the World Bank, he worked as Special Consultant to the Reserve Bank of India, Bombay, where he advised the Governor and Deputy Governors on financial sector policy, institutional reform, and market development and regulation.
