ShabaashMithu, biopic of former captain of women's national cricket team Mithali Raj, may not hit the ball out of the park but touches the right chords : The Tribune India

Nonika Singh Sir hamari bhi koi pehchaan hai, hum bhi to India ke liye khelte hain…With these words, director Srijit Mukherji sets the pitch of the film. In a cricket-obsessed nation where male cricketers are no less than demigods, how many of us can rattle off the names of five women cricketers? In the answer lies the tone of the biopic of former Test and ODI captain of women’s national cricket team Mithali Raj. And the narrative underlines time and again the insurmountable obstacles women cricketers face. Shabaash Mithu Director: Srijit Mukherji Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Vijay Raaz, Richard Bhakti Klein, Asad Ali Palijo Rating: *** No wonder in childhood years it is not Mithali, but her brother who is being trained for cricket. How she moves from Bharatnatyam to cricket, forms the earlier part of the story. In a way, the story of Mithali Raj is that of women’s cricket neglected/ignored for too long. Only expected, much of the run-time is devoted to the challenges before Mithali and the women’s team, who have to bear with unfair treatment and discrimination. One particular scene at the airport where the women team set to represent India is made to offload excess baggage while its male counterpart gets a rousing reception is a telling pointer of the way things were. Or perhaps still are. But the movie, while listing the uphill struggle, celebrates the achievement of Mithali as well as how she led the Indian team to the final of the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. More than once...

Mithali Raj shuts down troll: Tamil is my mother tongue but above all I am an Indian

By India Today Web Desk: Batting great and India women's ODI team captain Mithali Raj responded to a troll who had criticised her over her language preference on social media after the recently-concluded ODI series against South Africa. The Twitter user in question alleged that Mithali Raj doesn't know 'Tamil' but prefers Hindi, English and Telugu over her mother tongue. Mithali Raj hit back at the Twitter user with a classy tweet in which she said she is fluent in her mother tongue 'Tamil' and that constant criticism on social media doesn't discourage her but only serves as motivation. Mithali Raj also replied with famous Taylor Swift number "You Need to Calm Down" while asking the Twitter troll to calm down. Also, I would like to dedicate Mithali Raj led India to a 3-0 series whitewash against South Africa in the ODI series earlier this month. Raj won her 100th ODI as captain after India clinched a thriller against South Africa in the 3rd ODI in Vadodara. Mithali Raj also became only the 4th cricketer and the 1st in women's cricket to complete 20 years in international cricket. Mithali Raj, who retired from T20I cricket earlier this year, has completed more than 20 years in the highest form of cricket. Notably, Mithali had played her 1st-ever ODI for India in June, 1999 against Ireland. Sachin Tendulkar (22 years and 91 days), Sanath Jayasuriya (21 years and 184 days) and Javed Miandad (20 years and 272 days) have had longer careers (in terms of number of years played) i...

Taapsee Pannu, who is has started prepping for Mithali Raj’s biopic named Shabaash Mithu, is currently training under cricketer Nooshin Al Khadeer. Nooshin, who is Mithali's friend and former teammate, is advising Taapsee with respect to Mithali’s iconic style of cricket. She is also helping the actress with finer aspects of emulating the mannerisms of the former captain of the Indian women's national cricket team. Speaking about Taapsee and the former Indian captain, Nooshin said there are many similarities between the two. Elaborating on this, Nooshin shared, "Taapsee is extremely dedicated and her commitment to playing cricket like a professional is commendable. It is heartening to see so many common traits between Taapsee and Mithali like dedication, a go-getter attitude and tenacity." A few weeks back, Taapsee had shared on her Twitter page a glimpse from a preparatory session. The actress was holding a bat and giving an intense look while she captioned her picture as, "And romance with the bat n the ball has begun.... long way to go but a good start is half job done :) This is going to be another milestone of sorts.... For our captain cool @M_Raj03 and all her #WomenInBlue #ShabaashMithu @rahuldholakia @AndhareAjit @Viacom18Studios." How Is Noorie Related To Mithali Raj?

Noorie Mithali Raj: Bollywood has forever been interested with sports show. As a matter of fact, a large portion of them have left us with that wonderful trailing sensation when you leave the film corridor. Obviously, with positive energy running in your veins. Shabaash Mithu will leave you with a comparative inclination. Taapsee Pannu shoulders the film without help from anyone else, with almost no regular ‘male legend’ presence in his Mithali Raj biopic. Also, kid, she very kills it! Coordinated by Srijit Mukerji, Shabaash Mithu has every one of the quintessential flavors expected to blend one great pot of stew. Notwithstanding a couple of misses, the film is a decent watch following Bollywood being torn separated for its substance. Shabaash Mithu follows the existence of Indian cricketer Mithali Raj and how cricket happened to her. Everything began in her young life when her dear companion Noorie infused cricket into her veins, obviously, not in a real sense. A star Bharatanatyam artist in her group, a youthful Mithali held the bat in the organization of her companion and, at some point, proceeded to turn into the most youthful commander of the Indian Ladies’ Cricket Crew. In any case, in a country that reveres the ‘Men dressed in Blue’, Mithali and her contingent needed to cross supports to turn into the ‘Ladies dressed in Blue’. Which occurred eventually. However, we should not get into that yet. Taapsee Pannu is the main ‘legend’ in Shabaash Mithu. While the film beg...

Shabaash Mithu Movie Review

critic's rating: 3.5/5 Who's Mithali Raj? Ask even cricket crazy people and you'll draw a blank. For the uninitiated, Mithali is the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket. She’s the only female cricketer to surpass the 7,000 run mark in women's one-day international matches. She also holds the record for most half-centuries in WODIs. She became the first player from India, male or female, to score 2000 runs in T20Is, and was India’s captain from 2004 to 2022. She completed 20 years in international cricket in 2019. Aren't these statistics mind-boggling? Sadly, the masses remain ignorant of her achievements. But do numbers by themselves tell the complete story? Every sportsperson has come up through sheer grit and determination. And if he is Indian, then the struggle goes up ten fold. And multiply that by 100 if she's an Indian female athlete. Because of a complete lack of infrastructure, abysmal training and nutrition, and a lack of basic necessities are a given. So when you see Mithali (Taapsee Pannu) and her teammates squatting in the fields to answer nature's call, you begin to understand their difficulties. Director Srijit Mukherji has filled his film with many images that highlight the chasm that exists between male and female cricketers. Mithali and the team are asked to shed excess luggage, comprising winter clothing, on their first England tour, as their male counterparts jaunt royally in through a special corridor, with chants of India, India accompa...

Shabaash Mithu review: Blue bleeds over

Sports biopics don’t go out of fashion, and often they are a regurgitation of the last one we saw—streamlined chronicles of triumph against odds. The protagonist or protagonists are up against a social system, and also, usually family. The small wins pile up until a momentous contest lifts them out of their circumstances. A rousing climax is the sport biopic’s métier. Srijit Mukherji’s Shabaash Mithu, a biopic of the former captain of India’s women's cricket team Mithali Raj, doesn’t transcend or subvert that arc. We meet Mithali (Inayat Verma) as an adorable little girl learning Bharatnatyam somewhere in her hometown Secunderabad. Her brother, who has aspirations of playing for the Indian cricket team, rudely shoos her away from cricket grounds. But with the help of her spunky and equally endearing friend Noorie (Kasturi Jagnam), the two girls break in. Noorie is not only a foil to Mithali in demeanour—her street credo kind of courage gets her in trouble, especially with the boys, often—but also in the way Noorie has to fight patriarchy to be able to play a boy’s sport. The local coach Sampath (Vijay Raaz) shares tea with Mithali’s parents in the family’s living room, announcing his decision to choose Mithali over her brother to coach for a spot in his camp with the express goal of getting her into the national squad one day. He wouldn’t do the same with Noorie’s family. Noorie lies to her family and accompanies Mithali and her father to cricket grounds. Mithali can use m...
